GMAT FE: 705
-top 15 undergraduate US university
-3.75 GPA (STEM)
-2 years in Quant Asset Management at BB
- 2 president positions in UG
- white female, first gen
- teach underprivileged students
-23 (applying 2025)
- targeting HSW, Columbia

Should I retake the GMAT to be more competitive or focus on other aspects of the application?

@iheartpapaya - congrats on the score. It's atleast 10-20 points above the (Classic Equivalent) averages of HSW/ C, and given your undergrad pedigree/ GPA and Quant role, the "analytical" angles are sound.

I'd suggest focusing on the other aspects of the application. You could check out this write-up and this one for some broad guidelines and best-practices on this.

All the best!

Hi iheartpapaya,

Your GMAT FE scores are perfect. As you plan for HSW, they are extremely competitive requiring an out-of-the-box profile.

We recommend you work on signifying your goals and glorifying your profile which will help you convert HSW. We are happy to connect with you on a one-to-one basis and evaluate your profile to support you in building a roadmap for the coming few months before your Round 1 deadlines.

Hello iheartpapaya,

Thanks for writing in.

You do not need to retake the GMAT at all. You have a strong score and some talking points that will prove to be very impactful. Spend the next few months putting forth a strong application with well drafted essays and a strong set of recommendations.

The following video might help:

Hey iheartpapaya,

I hope you are doing well. Your profile is very strong! A 705 GMAT is excellent, particularly for someone with a STEM background and a 3.75 GPA. Your leadership experience with holding two president positions during undergrad is impressive, and your commitment to giving back by teaching underprivileged students showcases well-roundedness and social impact. Being a first-generation student adds another layer of depth to your story.

For top schools like HSW and Columbia, a 705 GMAT puts you squarely in the competitive range. Focusing your efforts on other aspects of your application might be the best strategy. Strong essays that highlight your unique experiences, compelling recommendation letters, and impactful extracurricular involvement can all significantly strengthen your candidacy.

Let's discuss your profile in more detail!

You have a lot of good things going for you.

I would think your score is good, and ask you to focus on other aspects of your profile - do well at work, try to work on impactful projects.  Build your extracurricular profile along the way.

Consider taking more time to have longer work experience, that will also allow you to attempt GMAT so that you get a higher score would be my take :)
