I work at a growing startup with a ~30 employees. I'm confident that I could get very strong recommendations from both my direct supervisor, the Chief Digital Officer, and the company's CEO, who I work closely with on daily basis. I'd like the CEO to be a rec. for all my apps, but am curious if I'm not diversifying the application enough by going to the CDO for my second rec.
Assuming both of them can give me unique letters and speak to my skillset directly and in different ways, should I be concerned that this isn't diversified enough? If I get a great rec. from my CEO, should I look to a prior supervisor at an old job for Rec. #2?
In answering the question, try to imagine the quality of the letters is equal no matter who I ask. Thanks in advance!

The fact that both the CEO and the CDO can speak uniquely to your different skill sets and experiences is ideal. What more do you truly need?
Moreover, you should presumably be a more seasoned and overall better professional in your more recent job than your previous one given all the accrued experience. Why do you feel the need to have someone recommend you from a position in which you are less experienced? Also, have you kept in touch with someone at your previous company? Are they aware of your growth since leaving that company? Their knowledge of your updated situation is important too.
The ONLY way I could justify that is if you had a very different type of role and therefore are able to showcase a truly different side of you such as if you worked in a strategy role at a growing startup at one company and an engineering role at a big company in another.
It's good to hear you are in a solid position!

The best thing to do is to talk to them, tell them about your goals and ambitions and also talk few pointers on the strengths and stories they can write in the letter. it will be beneficial to let them know what the other recommender can mention based on your discussion. Its not bad if they highlight few common traits, but they should definitely tell different stories and experience with you and champion your case with confidence
