R2 App Volume Down?

Question

Hey guys, seems like R1 app volume has been slightly higher than last year according to the application #s from all the school threads. Some schools such as Darden, Tuck, and Cornell have seen a pretty substantial (30%+) increase in R1. I assume this has a lot to do with he GMAT test change format which brought a lot of people out before the change in May and as a result were ready to apply in R1.

However now that R2 deadlines have passed at some schools, and most will pass this week I noticed that R2 volume is way down at most schools compared to last year.

I wonder if R2 will see a higher % of interview invites and acceptances? Now I'm starting to regret applying in R1.

There is still likely going to be a higher volume in R2 than in R1. Whether the total in R2 is lower than previous years', I can't say for sure. I'm guessing it's really not going to be that different. Although it may appear lower here, people don't necessarily post immediately that they've applied, so the numbers aren't completely indicative. R1 is always going to be an advantage because all the spots are available at that point.

One major advantage to R1 is that if you are waitlisted you have more time to be reconsidered. If your thesis is correct, then many people from R1's waitlist will make it in as they overestimated the number of applicants from R2 and will need to draw from the qualified waitlisters.

Admissions committees have been doing this for many many years. I don't think I've ever heard of schools under-enrolling,just the opposite in fact.

What was your outcome from applications in R1?

R1 has been bad so far. Ding at Cornell, WL at Ross, Interview at Duke. Really hope Fuqua or that WL at Ross will come through!!

Where you looking for R2? What's your GMAT? You may want to retake for your Ross WL. Have you posted your whole profile somewhere? If Duke comes through will you accept or do you want to stick with Ross?

Actually not applying anywhere for R2 as I plan to retake Gmat and re-apply next year. Gmat is around 650 but have really solid experience as an entrepreneur. I would definitely matriculate at Duke if I get in.

GMC is not exactly a representative sample of the applying public as a whole. From looking at the general numbers of a lot of schools, I think they base their offers around an expected yield of candidates they want to attend, not really individual round numbers as a whole. I would love to look behind the scenes at how they decide who to offer vs ding, especially for similar candidates. . .
