Official Explanation

3. The author discusses the effect of clouds on atmospheric temperature most likely in order to show that

Difficulty Level: 700

Explanation

This choice restates the author’s point in the first sentence of the second paragraph. Immediately thereafter, the author discusses clouds as an example of this point: it is difficult to predict the impact of greenhouse gases on clouds and thus on temperature.

The correct answer is (B).

Can you please let me know if my reasoning is correct or not. I chose option (E), since it said that radiative feedbacks are calculative quantities and the passage mentions that "Based on the measurements show that scientist are not able to judge whether the net effect will lead to cooling or heating of the planet", which means that the quantities were calculated. Hence, option (E)

Option (E) is ill-directed, it is an example of half right half wrong answer. Started with something good but ended in a dark hole. We have to infer something about the effect of clouds on atmospheric temperature but (E) talks about something else (the effects of radiative forcings on planetary energy balance).

The below text can be used as support from the passage.

"The effects of forcings and feedbacks on climate are complex and uncertain. For example, clouds trap outgoing radiation and thus provide a warming influence. However, they also reflect incoming solar radiation and thus provide a cooling influence."

No other text from the passage deals with this question.
