Okay so this one was close!


Part A

Dist (A to C via D) : 265 + 106 = 381

Time (A to C via D) : 6 hrs 45 min + 2 hrs 40 mins = 9 hrs 25 mins ~ 9.5 hrs

Average Speed = 381/9.5 ~ 40 km/hr


Part B

We will compare all 4 options and try to do in lesser time - ABCA, ABEA, ADCA, ADCBA

(i) Between ABCA, ABEA -> Path AB and Path EA are common - We'll say the sum of time taken to be Y (which is > 15 hrs)

In ABCA, time taken to travel Path BC and CE = 5 hrs 20 mins

In ABEA, time taken to travel Path BE = 3 hrs

Hence,

In ABCA, total time taken = Y + 5 hrs 20 mins
In ABEA, total time taken = Y + 3 hrs

Hence ABEA < ABCA.

(ii) Similarly between ADCA, ADCBA -> Path AD and Path DC are common - We'll say the sum of time taken to be X (= 9 hrs 25 mins)

In ADCA, total time taken = X + 8 hrs 45 mins
In ADCBA, total time taken = X + 12 hrs 05 mins

Hence ADCA < ADCBA.

(iii) We are left with 2 options - ABEA, ADCA. Again Path AE is common in both paths, and lets say it takes time Z (= 6 hrs 45 min.)

In ABEA, total time taken = Z + 11 hrs 45 mins
In ADCA, total time taken = Z + 11 hrs 25 mins

Hence, ADCA will take the least time

But I sincerely apologize, as due to some specific issues in the quant section, I even fail to understand the solutions provided by most of the experts on the forum. Honestly, due to this issue, I always wait for the solutions posted by Bismuth83. I am trying to catch the second part of the question, but there is a lot of confusion.

1. With the knowledge that the trip consists of routes AD and DC, we can calculate the average speed: \(Average \ Speed = \frac{Total \ Distance}{Total \ Time} = \frac{265 + 106}{6.75 + \sim 2.67} \approx \frac{371}{9.42} \approx 39.4\). The closest answer choice to 39.4 is 40.

2. Let's calculate the total time for all of the round trips in the answer choices (assuming that the way back from C, if not mentioned, goes through E because it's the quickest path):

- ABCA. Time \(= T(AB) + T(BC) + T(CA) = 8.75 + \sim 3.33 + 8.75 = 20.83\).
- ABEA. Time \(= T(AB) + T(BE) + T(EA) = 8.75 + 3 + 6.75 = 18.5\).
- ADCA. Time \(= T(AD) + T(DC) + T(CA) = 6.75 + \sim 2.67 + 8.75 = 18.17\).
- ADCBA. Time \(= T(AD) + T(DC) + T(CB) + T(BA) = 6.75 + \sim 2.67 + \sim 3.33 + 8.75 = 21.5\).

ADCA clearly takes the least time compared to the other paths.

3. Our answer will be: D1 - 40 and D2 - ADCA.

Hi, Is the assumption that ADCA / ABCA will pass through E and not B or E correct?
Will this be this ambiguous in actual test?
