Re: Refer to the pictograph that describes all of the students who play so [#permalink]
Suppose, 1 star = 5 students (Total 15 stars = 75 students)

I. If one student is selected at random from the 75, the chance that the student will be older than 17 or on the Varsity team, or both is

the student will be older than 17 or on the Varsity team, or both = (7 + 3) x 5
= 50

Hence, p(E) = 50 out of 75
= 2 out of 3

II. If one student is selected at random from the 75, the chance that the students is both younger than 17 and on the Varsity Soccer Team is

the students is both younger than 17 and on the Varsity Soccer Team = (3) x 5
= 15

Hence, p(E) = 15 out of 75
= 1 out of 5

Official Explanation

I. If one student is selected at random from the 75, the chance that the student will be older than 17 or on the Varsity team, or both is _________

To find the probability of choosing a student that is either older than 17, or on the Varsity team, or both can be written mathematically as follows.

P(> 17 n VT) + P(< 17 n VT)
=35 + 15
=50

To find the ratio divide the number found above by the total number of students.

\(\frac{50}{75}=\frac{2}{3}\)

In words this is 2 out of 3.

II. If one student is selected at random from the 75, the chance that the students is both younger than 17 and on the Varsity Soccer Team is_________

In mathematical terms this is written as the following,
P(VTn < 17)
=15

To find the ratio divide the number found above by the total number of students.

\(\frac{15}{75}=\frac{1}{5}\)

For quest 1, I understood that we took 7 = older than 7 +(or) 3 = V team, But why didnt we add accounted for BOTH part of the question. I know there is some gap in my understanding, could anybody explain

There are 15 stars, 7 are >17years and 3 are on varsity team but are <17 years.
Both are already accounted for in the 7 stars.

Actually, even if we had not mentioned, it would have given the answer.
The question is basically 'everyone>17(this will include varsity players and non-varsity player)' + 'varsity players<17'.
