Hello Everyone!
Although I've seen couple of questions in regards to auto inudstry on the forum, just wanted to check for few specific inputs about the B schools applications. Bold one's are the questions.
I've done my engineering in under gradutaion(not a mechanical engineer and not involved in core/tech work). Post that, I wanted to enter into the business sphere and joined one of the auto retail(dealership) companies in India. I started with sales over there and later got oppurtunities to lead different functions like operations, B2C sales and currently working on B2B corporate strategy for the orgnisation.
When coming to post MBA career, in the short term I've 2 plans-
1. Consulting with focus on auto industry- I've seen companies like MBB and other having consulted in auto industry on various problem like sales strategy, dealership network optimisation, EV penetration startegy etc.
But I'm not sure how practical this goal is as I've heard that consulting companies hire you for generalist roles and how does adcom find this pitch.2. Work with OEMs directly- Having experience in retail part, I want to get the experience in manufacturing to understand the operational/productional challenges, dealer management, startegy etc. I've seen couple of companies like Ford, General Motors hiring B school grads.
But would like to understand a bit detailed on this plan. When coming to the long term plan, I'm looking forward to come to India and start my own auto consulting company especially considering the revamp needed in the Indian market due to numerous loopholes I've indentified in terms of operational efficeicny, lack of digitalisation, lack of information or platforms for customers and other things. I've got few feedbacks that this pitch will not sound ambitious for the ad-coms considering the indsutry being a boring one.
Can you give any feedbacks on this?
Also any suggestions are which schools can be good fit for me in these regards?PS- I've 4 years of experience and planning for 2025 intakes. Got a GMAT score of 695. Not expectional but have decent extra curriculars.
Rishitha0311 I have worked for 6 years in the automotive sector pre-MBA and received admissions from some top B schools, so I'm happy to advise you on how you could do the same.
First of all, Rishitha, posting your goals scenarios like this - the ones you are going to write about in the final essays, on an open platform takes away your strategic advantage (also why good advice comes at a price!).
Second, it might seem (it does to me) you are thinking too narrowly if you are restricting yourself to the "automotive" sector. I don't know what schools you are applying to, but some of the more competitive schools may find that you have refrained from elaborating on what makes you so passionate about these seemingly safe goals in the automotive-related sectors. If you miss demonstrating that promethean fire, you will likely lose their interest.
A solid goals strategy is created when candidates spend days, even weeks, thinking about what they really want to do 10-15 years from now. I know it can be hard to think so far ahead, but that is the beauty of how adcoms evaluate your passion for your goals. You can think directionally about what kind of work you would want to do in the long term (need not be industry specific) and how your short-term career choices will help you build the right toolkit to fulfill your long-term objectives.
Regarding the consulting companies- MBBs, for example, put candidates on a generalist track, but depending on the candidate's interests, they can also put them on a specialist track after a few years. This is especially sought after by people who want to take an exit in a high-ranking position in a specific industry. For example, if someone has a passion for the healthcare or pharma industry, they would seek a specialist track in a few years so they can get the opportunity to engage closely with big pharma and network their way through to top-ranking positions (MBB exits).Hope you found my answer useful. If you are looking for guidance to ace your admits, feel free to connect
Best wishes
