Hello experts,
Scored 730 (Q51, V37) on my GMAT today. Target was 750+
I plan to retake GMAT again in 15 days (highly represented background and so need a better score to target HBS/Wharton) and needed help with study plan and resources.
Used
OG and Quant+Verbal review. Also took 4 official practice tests (scored 670,720,770,780). The last two scores were encouraging and so I felt confident to give the test. Unfortunately I spent a lot of time (5-7 mins) on a SC question which derailed my verbal section. Had to just skim through last 3-4 questions. Pretty sure got all of them wrong. Either ways, feel confident on RC and CR. Need to work really hard on SC. Don't need to work on Quant.
Can you please help with a 15 day plan/strategy? Also, can you please also share other resources (along with tests) which I can use? Surely need to work on time management. I found the
GMATNinja Youtube videos on SC amazing (but watched them only 3 days before the exam) and want to build on that approach.
Thanks and Regards
Hi JSPUser1995
Congratulations on scoring a 730 with a Q51. You have clearly mastered Quant section. However, there is still room for improvement in Verbal. Let me help you.
For GMAT Verbal, it is very important that you follow the
right methodology and the
logical approach. Your focus has to be on
eliminating four incorrect choices rather than choosing the right one. The key is to develop a solid understanding of the concepts that are typically tested on the GMAT and master the process skills that are required to solve GMAT questions. Only then, you will be able to smartly avoid the traps set by the test makers.
Each module in Verbal (SC, CR and RC) has to be approached in a different way. For example, before you start learning the concepts of
SC, you need to understand that SC questions on GMAT test your ability to convey the right meaning without any ambiguity. So, it's important to approach them from a meaning stand-point. You might have often come across answer choices which are both grammatically correct and convey a logical meaning but are indeed incorrect because they do not convey the intended meaning. So, the process to approach SC questions is to:
• Comprehend the original meaning of the sentence
• Identify errors if any (both grammatical and meaning wise)
• Eliminate answer choices which either are grammatically incorrect or do not convey the intended meaning
You can go through the link below to understand the process in a better way:
Once you start solving SC questions using a systematic approach as detailed above, you will be able to avoid taking too much time in SC questions as there will be no confusion in your mind regarding the approach.
To improve your Verbal score to V40+, you have to analyze even the minute things and make sure to work on them. If you have an ESR, I can definitely help you in analyzing it. We can get in touch over a zoom conference call and we can analyze it together. This way we can figure out what exactly your weak areas are and then make a plan of action.
