My answer is (D). It took me 57 seconds.

The whole sentence is underlined, which typically means we need to pick an option that makes most sense.

(A) Who is "long knowing that it is critically important for remembering past experiences"? "Scientists" or "a part of the brain called the hippocampus". It is not ideal. The sequence of "now / new info“ + ”old info" is also a bit jarring.

(B) seems to be a coordinate sentence following "IC1 + comma + FANBOYS + IC2" pattern. (IC stands for Independent Clause.) Unfortunately, "Scientists having long known that a part of the brain called the hippocampus is critically important for remembering past experiences" is not an independent clause.

(C) It is wrong to suggest that "the hippocampus" "Having long known that a part of the brain is critically important for remembering past experiences".

(D) Straightforward presenting "old info + new / now info" in a logical way.

(E) Who is "believing that it might also play a role in remembering the passage of time"? Scientists" or "a part of the brain called the hippocampus".
Also, the new info is more important and should not be relegated to a modifier.

My Pick is (D)

A) Ving Modifier gives the sense of cause and effect; However, merely knowing that something is important would not help in forming some belief.

B) No verb for the subject in first part of sentence.

C) Structural issue, wrong modification and not a legitimate sentence.

D) Correct - captures the meaning appropriately

E) Similar issue as in A

Scientists now believe that a part of the brain called the hippocampus might play a role in remembering the passage of time, long knowing that it is critically important for remembering past experiences.

A) Scientists now believe that a part of the brain called the hippocampus might play a role in remembering the passage of time, long knowing that it is critically important for remembering past experiences. -> Meaning changed, we don't know, it refers to whom. Incorrect.

B) Scientists having long known that a part of the brain called the hippocampus is critically important for remembering past experiences, and they now believe that it might also play a role in remembering the passage of time. -> 1st clause is not IC, it is DC. DC + conjunction + IC is incorrect form.

C) Having long known that a part of the brain is critically important for remembering past experiences, the hippocampus, scientists now believe might also play a role in remembering the passage of time. -> Modifier error, hippocampus doesn't modify "having long known....". Incorrect.

D) While scientists have long known that a part of the brain called the hippocampus is critically important for remembering past experiences, they now believe that it might also play a role in remembering the passage of time. -> It is better.

E) Scientists have long known that a part of the brain called the hippocampus is critically important for remembering past experiences, now believing that it might also play a role in remembering the passage of time -> Modifier error, "not believing" is incorrect.

So, I think D. :)

Scientists now believe that a part of the brain called the hippocampus might play a role in remembering the passage of time, long knowing that it is critically important for remembering past experiences.

Analysis: Modifier - time is modified by 'long knowing' which is incorrect. Scientists should be modified by 'long knowing'.

A) Scientists now believe that a part of the brain called the hippocampus might play a role in remembering the passage of time, long knowing that it is critically important for remembering past experiences. -- 'long knowing' incorrectly modifies time. Drop Option A.

B) Scientists having long known that a part of the brain called the hippocampus is critically important for remembering past experiences, and they now believe that it might also play a role in remembering the passage of time. -- 'and' is not required. 'Scientists having long known that ..., they now believe ...' would work. Drop Option B.

C) Having long known that a part of the brain is critically important for remembering past experiences, the hippocampus, scientists now believe might also play a role in remembering the passage of time. -- 'the hippocampus' modifies the entire clause before the comma. 'Having known' modifies 'the hippocampus' which is incorrect as the hippocampus cannot have known. Drop Option C.

D) While scientists have long known that a part of the brain called the hippocampus is critically important for remembering past experiences, they now believe that it might also play a role in remembering the passage of time. -- 'they' refers to the scientists and correctly modifies the second clause in the sentence. Keep Option D.

E) Scientists have long known that a part of the brain called the hippocampus is critically important for remembering past experiences, now believing that it might also play a role in remembering the passage of time -- 'now believing' incorrectly modifies 'past experiences'. Drop Option E.

Answer should be Option D.
