I'm glad you reached out, and I'm happy to help. I realize you are probably concerned regarding your initial practice test score; however, remember, it's just a starting point. My guess too is that you did not know anything about the GMAT when you took it. Thus, there is hope my friend! Regarding how to move forward, I have a great article for you. If you have any additional questions, feel free to reach out.

Hi NewNoob,

Many GMATers are unhappy with their initial practice scores, but you really shouldn't be. That first CAT/mock result is just a measure of your skills right now - and you'll improve on that result over time as you learn more about the content, Tactics and little 'secrets' of the Exam. From what you describe, you will have to work on a number of different areas (not only 'content' knowledge, but also Tactics, doing disciplined work on your note pad at all times, getting comfortably with "dumping" questions that are too hard or too weird - so that you don't waste time, etc.).

Before I can offer you any additional advice for your studies, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on your timeline and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied so far? How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) What study materials do you currently have access to?
3) When you took this CAT/mock, did you run out of time and leave any questions unanswered (and if so, then how many questions did you NOT answer in each section?)?

Goals:
4) What is your overall goal score?
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?
