Hi all,
I am looking to apply to HEC Paris, ESSEC, INSEAD and ESCP round 2 for the MIM programme.
My current profile looks like this -
Undergraduate studies - Ashoka University, 2.79/4 CGPA, Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology
GMAT - Not given yet. Scored 650/800 in the last mock.
Work experience - 1+ years in government relations/strategic communications and public affairs for a French multinational conglomerate based in New Delhi.
Internships - Have a couple internships in digital strategy, sustainable development etc.
Extracurriculars - University football team, know a couple instruments etc.
Any suggestions on whether my current profile would suffice for these schools?
Hey
sidshpongled,
You have a decent profile.
To start with your GPA, 2.79 is on a bit on the lower end. Nevertheless, if you pose the right alibi to justify why your GPA was low, you can easily overshadow this drawback in your profile. You can draw attention towards how you were looking to build your profile holistically and were involved in various projects, internships, and extracurricular activities. However, make sure you highlight the major takeaways from each endeavor undertaken.
Moving on, your GMAT score of 650 could further be improved when it comes to targeting the top schools. 690+ is what will work in your favour as it will widen your scope of getting into premiere business schools and also act as proof of your academic capabilities. So, retake is definitely what is recommended.
Another significant aspect that schools focus on is extracurricular activities as they are looking for a comprehensive profile. You thus need to make sure that you mention a decent amount of EC and certifications, citing which, you need to dig deep into the details of each endeavour, connecting the dots as to how you’ve benefited from it. In case you want to build your profile further, you can take up volunteering work at local shelters or NGO’s as it would help showcase the socially responsible side to your personality.
On the professional front, you hold 1+ year in government relations/ strategic communications and public affairs for a French multinational conglomerate, which is indeed impressive. Here, you can talk about the international exposure you got while dealing with the international clients, emphasize on the projects you took up, events conducted, etc. To boost your profile, you can further highlight CSR activities to showcase responsibilities taken up and the impacts created by you. Following this approach would allow you to showcase a well enriched professional experience, bringing you at par with applicants adorning big brands on their CV.
Further given your school choices, HEC and INSEAD fall under the dream category whereas ESSEC and ESCP come under the competitive category. In my opinion, you’d have a 40-50% chance of getting into dream schools while roughly around 70% chances of winning an admit from schools in the competitive category. However, do note that in order to apply to HEC, you’d require a GMAT score of 710+.
Secondly, while applying to business schools, a better strategy is to target a mixed bunch of schools from the dream, competitive, and safe category
That said, here are a few schools you can consider:
DREAM: LBS, Duke, Cornell
COMPETITIVE: SSE, IE Business School, WHU
SAFE: EDHEC, Skema, Grenoble
Lastly, to complement your profile you need to begin prepping for a strong application that includes essays, letter of recommendation, statement of purpose, and resume that highlights all your strong suits, gives reasoning for the weaknesses, and displays how you’d be a good addition to the cohort. Also, it is suggested that you apply in the upcoming round to enhance your chances of receiving an admit from your target schools.
