The karma is a great idea if it is possible. The only problem is how would we know if a mod gave a point for a post by someone, would it be possible for half a dozen mods to give a + for the same post? I agree thats a great system, basically a star system or something. Get x number of positive points get into one place, hit a limit of negative points and you get suspended or banned...that would help police people more than just prae making decisions. I know there have been people in the past I think walk the tightrope with poor taste but its never enough to get a ban. Warn them a few times with something that sticks with them and they may decide to behave better.

Now all these ideas are well and good but it might be far more work for tino and the guys to try to do now. I know there are some posts or thread ideas people have made that deserve some serious credit. Same should hold true for wikis, if someone does a huge thing for a wiki page. Like doing a best practices for whatever (along the lines of the recommendation one).

well, one of the forums I visit runs off this same phpbb software, and they have these "karma" things, so I think they're built in and just need to be activated? Tino?

As for multiple mods giving multiple +'s, that's exactly what it should be like. If someone did something good enough for all mods to give that person kudos, then it's a "unanimous" vote for that person's contributions. That's why the threshold for karma points to access certain forums could be a bit higher, thus allowing mods to give karma points freer.

The other alternative is each mod has some responsible area, like river with wikis, me with essays, nervous with gmat, etc... and then if the member does something good there, the responsible mod can give out karma points. of course, the pitfall for that is some mods may get busy and no karma points will be given for a while, but it shouldn't be too big of an impact if the person is contributing elsewhere, or Praet can step in to reward the karma for that mod.

We'll see what tino says about how easy it is to implement the karma system. if it's easy, then we can try to set a threshold (50, 100, 200, etc...) for the different forums. This can even be applied for the GMATClub Math section, since it reduces the amount of people who post one word replies just to get access.
