wow, that was a lot of discussion in the past couple of hours!
For the member profile page, unfortunately there is no real way of assigning access unless we can implement the "voting" system where you need N out of all the mods' votes to get access as a "trusted member". Barring that, it's either have a few mods and Praet approve requests on an individual basis, or set a hard post limit. I like the anonymous approval process (so the mods won't look like bad cops), is that implementable, tino? If not, I think the volume of requests for the member profiles may be too much for one person (Praet or river) to handle, unlike the essay vault, which is more selective. Actually, speaking of the "friend" function, tino, can there be a way that if a member is a "friend" of 2 or more mods, then he/she will become a trusted member? If that automation doesn't work, the other way would be to allow the mods to see who a member's friends are, and if that member has a certain amount of "friends", any mod can give the member access to the profiles. That will require the mods to be judicial about who to add as friends and still take some "heat" off mods having to reject a member's request.
As for the essay vaults, river, you can still post your essays there with a password on the PDF, and only give the password to those people you trust. This way at least people know there are essays out there they have the potential to look at. Different people have different requirements of privacy, so I think the hard post limit to access the forum added on top of the password protected PDF should satisfy most people. The 400 post limit is a bit high, but that is a decision that Praet made a while ago, and we would have to convince him to change it.
I would personally like the friend/foe function be more useful in granting access to certain forums, helping other mods determine the character of a member (if someone is listed as the "foe" of nervous, for example, I would scrutinize that person even more when he/she requests any access), etc...
Actually, come to think of it, many phb sites I participate in have "karma" systems, where only mods and admins can give positive or negative "karma" to members. Some of those sites allow people with a certain amount of "karma" points to access certain forum areas or get perks like "custom titles". Tino, can we implement something like that? I think that's probably the best compromise between having mods approve requests and having hard post limits. You can ONLY earn karma points from mods, and usually mods give them out for great posts or a helpful attitude. Once you earn a certain amount of karma points, you can have access to the member profiles, and at a higher limit, the essay vault. With that, someone with 10 very valuable posts could get enough karma (from mods) to access the forums, while someone with 500 useless posts will never be able to access it. I think it's probably the best way if this forum can support it.
What do you all think?
