Hi

I belong to the indian IT male category. I took my GMAT in may 2016 and scored 690(V40,Q44).

My profile is as follows:
1) Total work experience of 5 years with a product based Japanese company in Bangalore as Software Engg. Got 3 promotions in 5 years.
2) Currently working onsite in Japan for approximately last 10 months
3) Current role includes negotiating with Japanese and Australian clients in Japan(working in strategic role, usually done by managers) for last 10 months
4) Studied in top 25 engineering colleges in India and got GPA 7.5
5) Got 86% in 10th standard and 84% in 12th standard

Extra curriculars:
1) Played cricket tournaments for company.
2) Played cricket at national level in Japan representing state team. The team was quite diverse with people from 5 different nationalities. Our aim was to promote cricket in Japan and had people from Japan playing in our team too.
3) Learnt N5 level Japanese. I am able to read, write and understand basic Japanese.
4) Worked for approx 2 years for different NGO's
5) Represent my team in office while discussing issues faced by team infront of higher management.

What are my chances in ISB, IIM's in india?
Can you suggest other good schools outside India?
Should I retake GMAT and aim for higher score?

Thanks a lot :)

Hello,
Thanks for the info; I do see a lot of strengths to your profile, though you are coming from a competitive demographic... but the multiple promotions, extensive international experience, the level of strategic work you are doing, and your extra-curriculars all help.

I think you would have a potential shot at ISB & IIMs, though not easy by any means. In terms of schools outside of India, it really depends upon so many factors and your preferences, but would be great to aim for those with a GMAT average of say 650-680 for better chances. If looking at the US, that might be schools in the roughly 20-40 ranking give or take (US News) for example. But there are great options in Australia, Asia, Europe etc too.

In terms of re-taking, if you feel you could improve (the quant in particular), then why not give it another shot right, depending upon your timelines... but varies based upon how many times you've taken it, your deadlines, how your practice test scores went, etc. Keep us posted!

Hello Jen,

I am utterly confused about school selection and need help from experts regarding my admission with scholarship chances at b-schools.
Hope to receive your able guidance. My profile is as follows:

Nationality: Indian
Gender: Male
GMAT: 720 (Q49, V40)
TOEFL: 115
Wrok-Ex: 74 months till date
Qualification: Bachelors in Electrical Engg. from Indian University
Industry: Manufacturing

About Employer: My current firm is one of the biggest heavy electricals manufacturing firm in India, semi-government. We are primarily manufacturers in the Power sector and Transportation industry.

My work Profile: Engineering (Locomotives design in the transportation sector. Have been part of many large-scale projects with many team-leading experiences)

Highlight: Currently leading a EUR-47 million project for India's latest locomotives of German design with Indian Railways as clients. Client-side negotiations in technical domain are very common in my profile.

Two work-related revenue-generating initiatives.

*** International Work-Ex: I do not have any experiences of work abroad. However, I am working with a Russian team on a revamping project that I am leading. In the pas, I have had worked on two Make-In-India projects (an initiative of Indian Government towards foreign investments in India) with Japanese teams.
Also, once I was selected for an inspection tour and visited a Japanese firm for a fortnight.
Besides this, I frequently liaise with foreign vendors for procurement of equipment. Most vendors are European.

But EVEN then, I have NOT travelled abroad.

Extra-curriculars are plenty. I have been associated with theatre. I write poems as a hobby. I have had many event-organisational experiences like being the School Head Boy, leading college festivals etc.

Please suggest my chances at following b-schools:

1) LBS
2) INSEAD
3) Cambridge - Judge

4) Harvard
5) Kellogg
6) Haas
7) Fuqua
8) Darden

I would be obliged to receive your help.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Abhishek

Hi Abhishek,
That is a tough school list you've got there!! I don't know how your grades were at university or much about the details, accomplishments and leadership experiences on the job, or what your post-MBA goals are or your community involvement..so, many unknowns, BUT even with a respectable 720, the Indian engineering applicant pool is SO competitive and at the moment I fear you may get 'lost' in the crowd at the very top tier of schools you've described.... Darden would be most within reach. I'd aim for more in the 12-30 (ish) range, for better chances in the US, and in Europe potentially outside LBS/INSEAD/OxBridge.... just trying to give you your best shot, which would also help with scholarship chances etc too. Good luck!
