I just did my GMAT Focus Test and got 655 overall with 83 (81st percentile) in quant. For context, I did my bachelor in communications and have been working in mainly in a marketing role, so not a very strong quant background. Targeting top MBA programs in the UK, namely LBS & Oxbridge.

Am planning to retake my GMAT in September, but came across an advice to maybe take MBA Math course to bolster my application, should I take it instead of retaking the GMAT?
Nmcong95 - I'd rather be honest.

Depending on your competitive pool (e.g. whether you belong to an overrepresented demographic), a 655 may or may not be good enough for LBS/ Oxbridge.

I'd like to understand your overall profile i.e. work-ex, ECA's, post-MBA goals etc. in order to assess better.

Broadly, an 81st percentile seems alright, but if you feel you can improve it (based on your mock performance etc.), you should retake. If you feel a retake may likely not result in a higher score, MBAMath could be an option to look at.

Remember that the rest of the application i.e. essays, interviews also play an equally (if not more) important role.

Arvind

Hi,
Nationality plays a big role in MBA admissions. If you belong to an over represented pool such as Indians, you should simply retake GMAT. While I regularly suggest MBA Math to my applicants to boost their quant profile, I feel 655 is a tad lesser (if you belong to an over represented pool), especially if you have not had quant heavy coursework in undergrad. MBA courses in subjects including Marketing are quant focussed, so you would definitely want to prove your quant capability to the adcom.

MBA Math can not replace the high quant requirement from GMAT, but it can bolster it. So if you have it in you to reatake, that would be my suggested approach. You may then need to relook your application timelines.

All the best,

Hi Nmcong95,

Your GMAT FE scores are decent. However, the admissions committee will take into consideration your overall profile to ensure a mixed cohort. You can consider pursuing an MBA math course as an extra value ad in your applications.

I agree with Namita here. Nationality is (often) everything in global B schools. The B schools will compare your sectional scores with your country averages. GMAT scores are plotted on bell-shaped curves, and the adcoms have a good enough idea of where someone from a marketing background in your country/geography would fall on the normalized curve. Only take GMAT Math after discussing it with the Adcom department at the respective schools. Present yourself well and request candid feedback on your GMAT performance. Sometimes, if the schools come to love you as a prospective student, they may even ask you to improve your GMAT score or take MBA math at a later stage if they see your quant abilities as a risk. If you haven't already, it's high time you start engaging with the respective marketing teams of the B schools.

Best wishes
