I do not think one needs to delve too deep into this simple exercise of proper and parallel idiom namely "as much by … as by".
Only A and B do that but A is wrong for using like for denoting admittedly examples.

A. like, for example, the deadly coral snake are so numerous that in general predators are deterred as much by nonpoisonous imitation as by the true appearance of poisonousness

B. such as the deadly coral snake are so numerous that predators are deterred as much in general by nonpoisonous imitation as by the true appearance of poisonousness

E. -- for example, the deadly coral snake -- are in general so numerous that predators are deterred as much by nonpoisonous imitation as the true appearance of poisonousness

A,D we can eliminate for using like.
E is very awkward and lack llism also
..C lack llism.."as much by nonpoisonous imitation as (missing by) the true"
B is answer

Species that are colorful and aggressive in appearance like, for example, the deadly coral snake are so numerous that in general predators are deterred as much by nonpoisonous imitation as by the true appearance of poisonousness.

A) like, for example, the deadly coral snake are so numerous that in general predators are deterred as much by nonpoisonous imitation as by the true appearance of poisonousness
One cannot use like to present example.

B) such as the deadly coral snake are so numerous that predators are deterred as much in general by nonpoisonous imitation as by the true appearance of poisonousness

C) such as the deadly coral snake are so numerous that in general predators are deterred as much by nonpoisonous imitation as the true appearance of poisonousness
The structure "as much by X as by Y" is not followed.

D) like the deadly coral snake are so numerous that, in general, predators are deterred as much by nonpoisonous imitation as the true appearance of poisonousness
1. 'like' cannot be used to present example.
2. In case the sentence wanted to show comparison, there must be a comma after the "coral snake". "Like" can be followed by noun or noun phrase.

E) -- for example, the deadly coral snake -- are in general so numerous that predators are deterred as much by nonpoisonous imitation as the true appearance of poisonousness
1. By shifting the "in general", the option has changed the meaning of the sentence and goes against the logic of the original sentence presented.
2. The structure "as much by X as by Y" is not followed.

Thus, option B.

Official Explanation

Creating a filter: we can pause early on in the original sentence, because the word "like" is redundant with the words "for example." So (A) is eliminated. In giving an example, "such as" is preferable to "like," since "like" is comparative in nature. We'll look for something like that.

Applying the filter: our expectation leads is to favor (B), (C), and (E).

Finding objective defects: choice (C) is missing the word "by" before "the true appearance"; the "by" is required because "as much... as" is a two-part construction requiring parallelism of its elements. In fact, (D) and (E) have the exact same problem.

The correct answer is (B).

Hope it helps

Answer choice (B) is correct.

Answer choices (A) and (D) incorrectly use "like" to introduce an example.
Answer choice (E) improperly introduces the appositive by lacking a dash before "for example"
Answer choices (C), (D), and (E) are not parallel as they do not repeat the use of "by"
