I'm having quite a time writing the first essay question - It's vague, so my answers are too! I've already written about 10-drafts and scratched them.

You are not alone. I have been through 8 draft already in past 5 days. Just as a word of caution spend the same amount of time on each essay.
What I have noticed is people spend way too much time on Stanford's first essay and then make the second essay pretty much similar to the any other business school essays.
What has really helped me is a free software called "Freemind". It is a mind mapping tool. I know it is little old school but it works to gain some clarity and structure in your thought process. Also go to youtube and search for "Breakdown of Stanford GSB essay 2010". That is good place to jump start the whole process.
