I'm starting to plan applying for an MBA and have a strong interest in Duke. I'm interested in hearing your feedback on my background and if anyone has any personal experience about Duke (application process, program pros/cons). I will of course apply to other schools, but I feel that Duke is at the top of my list.
I got a BS and MS in Industrial and Systems Engineering. During my BS I was an intern at an academic medical hospital doing process improvement. Upon graduation I got a full time offer and accepted. I then started pursuing my MS while working full time. I currently have two years of full-time experience and have done over 100 projects for the organization. I'm also a Six Sigma Black Belt. I have a strong analytic slant, but have also led many of the projects. I would honestly say my exposure to upper management has been pretty decent, but could be better (and it's not like I work for a Fortune 500). For example, I'm responsible for an organization-wide labor productivity system and report.
I'm on track to become a "senior engineer" within 6 months-year. So my plan is to hopefully get a promotion in around 6 months and then apply to an MBA within a year from now.
My missing piece is I haven't taken the GMAT yet, but did fine on GRE and expect to get a decent score, hopefully around 700.

I was accepted to Duke in round 1 of this year, but have decided to matriculate at another school. Nevertheless, Duke is a great school with a very friendly student body aka 'Team Fuqua.' It is particularly strong in health sector management and is ideally located in RTP. The Duke app was also one of my favorites. There's a 25 random things question that is actually relatively fun compared to essays at other schools. I think this reflects how Fuqua really values the whole person and getting to know each candidate. That's further reflected in the fact that the school offers open interviews.
HailMary would be a good GMATClub user for you to reach out to. He was accepted to Duke in the EA round.
A couple of questions/thoughts:
- Are you planning to stay in your current industry post-MBA? Your career goals should factor into your school selection. You provided a lot of info about your current role, but I'm not clear what your goals are.
- Make sure you engage in extracurriculars if you aren't already. That's important at all schools, but Fuqua particularly looks for well-rounded students.
- Get the GMAT finished sooner rather than later. It'll make your life significantly easier if you aren't worried about the GMAT when applications go live.

-I honestly don't have strong future goals figured out. I know I need to before I can have a strong application. I think if I stayed in the healthcare industry I would be better off because at this point I have so much knowledge, but I'm not married to it. I have enjoyed my time in a hospital, but I will always wonder what else is out there if I don't try something new. My general focus is operations and process improvement which I would like to lead me into upper management.
-For extracurriculars, I'm interested in joining a local non-profit and hopefully find one that will let me be part of a board or have a leader role. That has yet to materialize, but hopefully post-graduation I will have more time.
