Correct Answer A.

Any statement that supports the claim that Carcol's engine are not responsible for the derailments will be answer.

Statement A clearly states five accidents weren't due to mechanical failure rather carcol's engine saved many lives. A should be the answer.
Option B, D & E are against to the carcol's engine utilization. Option C is irrelevant.

Statistics released last week demonstrated that the Speedy train company had 5 derailments in the last five years. In all five accidents Caracol-built engines were involved. This year Speedy bought 3 more Caracol engines, which surprised many in the industry, since experts had expected Speedy to avoid that particular model after the accidents.

Which of the following, if true, provides the best reason for Speedy's decision?

A The five accidents were not due to mechanical failure, and in fact the safety features of the Caracol-built engines were key in saving many lives.
B Speedy reported fewer derailments in the 1980s, when it used Atlas engines on all of its trains.
C Safety inspectors have given a clean bill of health to all of Speedy's passenger cars and dining cars.
D In the last five years many other train companies have switched from Caracol engines to the engines of its major competitor.
E Speedy determined that human error was not a major cause of the accident in four of the five accidents.

This question is on resolving the paradox. Let’s first look what the problem is:

A statistical data is given mentioning a company called Speedy train has resulted in 5 derailments in the last five years. To add on, the blame is focussed on the CARACOL ENGINES which propelled the train.

This year, the company has added 3 new caracol engines to its arsenal.

The paradox is : An engine which is blamed for the five derailments happened earlier has been bought again this year. If we are to add fuel to the blame, then we would have quoted corruption in purchase of these engines. Misappropriation of funds etc.

But, we are asked to resolve the paradox. Both the statements are true. We need to find a reason which suggests the logic or reasoning behind the purchase of 3 Cara of engines.

Let’s pre think of the reason here.
1) Malfunction of signaling equipments have led to derailments.
2) Terrorist sabotage of rail tracks.
3) The engine driver had an health problem which has caused the incident.
4) Human errors.

In all the reasons mentioned above, we haven’t said anything related to failure of caracol engines. What if , the engines safety systems are of state of art and the derailments have led to zero deaths or casualties. This would have led to the purchase of these extra engines. Moreover, if the engines are fitted with anti collision avoidance devices which avert danger to a greater extent.

In the light of these reasons, only option which stands out the rest is OPTION A

E Speedy determined that human error was not a major cause of the accident in four of the five accidents.

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

We have to justify Speedy's decision to buy more Caracol engines, considering they had been involved in all five derailments. So we have to show that there is a good reason to buy Caracol engines. A, the correct answer, does that by showing how the Caracol engines actually saved lives.

B, D, and E all provide information to argue against buying Caracol engines. C is simply irrelevant.
