Hi Shalzil92,

First off, let’s look at the good news. You were able to score as high as Q46 on your official practice exams and scored 2 points below that on test day, so nice job!

Regarding verbal, assuming that you took your official practice exams under realistic testing conditions, the results show that, on a good day, you are capable of scoring higher than V28. Thus, it’s quite possible that nerves, stress, tiredness, or a combination of all three negatively affected your test-day performance. However, it’s also possible that you have some lingering weaknesses that were exposed on test day. Although I’m unsure of how you prepared, it’s possible that, in your verbal preparation, you did not really learn to do what you have to do in order to score high on the actual GMAT. Rather, you picked up on some patterns that were effective in getting you relatively high scores on practice tests. So, for you to hit your score goal, your verbal preparation probably needs to be more complete, meaning that you have to go through the various types of GMAT questions carefully to find your exact weaknesses, fill gaps in your knowledge, and strengthen your skills.

The overall process will be to learn all about how to answer question types with which you currently aren't very comfortable and do dozens of practice questions category by category, basically driving up your score point by point. When you do dozens of questions of the same type one after the other, you learn just what it takes to get questions of that type correct consistently. If you aren't getting close to 90 percent of questions of a certain type correct, go back and seek to better understand how that type of question works, and then do more questions of that type until you get to around at least 90 percent accuracy in your training. If you get 100 percent of some sets correct, even better.

For verbal specifically, you have to become more skilled at clearly defining the differences between trap choices and correct answers. Otherwise, you will get stuck guessing between two choices or be surprised to find that you incorrectly answered questions that you thought you answered correctly. Becoming more skilled in this way takes carefully analyzing all of the answer choices to lots of verbal questions to develop an eye for the logical differences between the choices. In other words, you have to go beyond answering practice questions and reading explanations to doing deep analysis of questions to learn to see everything that is going on in them.

I know you and Jeff have been in close contact with Jeff, so reach out if you have any further questions.

Let’s do this!!

Thanks Scott for the reply. TTP definitely helped me to boost my score by 4 points on this try and hopefully more on the next try on 25th October. I've learned a lot from the course which I'm sure would help me in B-School. I just received my ESR, and I have forwarded it to Jeff for analysis. Jeff has told me that he would send me a study plan for the next 2 weeks.

For the verbal part, I'm surprised to see that my sub-section percentile ranking is 28th for CR, 35th for RC and 77th for SC. Before the test, I considered CR to be my strongest part, followed by SC and RC as on all the mock tests that I gave, I got most of the CR questions correct. However, I took around 40sec less to solve a CR question on the D-day compared to before the GMAT, which maybe would have led to the poor performance. I used to take on avg 2m 15s to solve a CR problem before the test, but on the D-day, I took 1m 25s(However, I guessed immediately 2 CR at the end). Maybe I tried to RUSH through CR and RC! Because on the mocks, I was usually left with 5 questions in the final minute, whereas on the test day I was only left with 2. So, maybe I need to completely focus on accuracy rather than on completing the test.

I think you should sit back and relax. you've already done so much using one of the best courses available. Review is the most crucial aspect and you should spend a lot of time on it. just don't do anything new in these days..review the questions, analyze your patterns of the mistakes you make and meditate maybe. mental status can affect the test badly even if it's a mock. You have to deal with the test day nervousness and anxiety issues in these few days before the test. so just relax and goodluck :)

Hi Shahzil92,

I'm sorry to hear that Test Day didn't go as well as planned. When these types of score drops occur, the two likely "causes" involve either something that was unrealistic during practice or something that was surprising (or not accounted for) on Test Day. Before we discuss any of those potential issues though, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on your timeline and your goals:

1) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
2) What Schools are you planning to apply to?
3) Do you have the freedom to push back your next Test Date (for example, by another month if needed)?

You might also choose to purchase the Enhanced Score Report (which you CAN do, even for a Cancelled Score). While the ESR doesn’t provide a lot of information, there are usually a few data points that we can use to define what went wrong on Test Day (and what you should work on to score higher). If you purchase the ESR, then I'll be happy to analyze it for you.

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

Thanks for the reply Rich. I took the practice tests in realistic test conditions. Please find below my replies:
1) I am planning to apply to 5 B-Schools by Jan, 2020. I am yet to start the applications.
2) I am planning to apply to IVEY, QUEEN'S SMITH SCHOOL OF BUSINESS, ROTMAN, SCHULICH and MCGILL.
3) I want to give it on 25th October as I feel I'm ready and maybe I can get the desired score (670-680). Pushing back the date further may further lower my skills on Quant I feel as I may forget the methods.

I have purchased the ESR. I have sent it to you in DM for analysis.

Thanks Abhi for the reply. I think you're right. I was thinking of doing the same. I was thinking of just giving 2 GMAT mocks(3 & 4) in the next 2 weeks and carefully reviewing them.

I’m glad that you are in contact with Jeff. Regarding verbal, I do agree that you need to focus on accuracy. Rushing through the verbal section will cause many careless errors, and thus really bring down your score.
