Pack 2, Question 2 of 5
Studies show that even though physical activity is minimal among working adults, a moderate walking pace instead of extreme aerobic activity is more beneficial to the health of both the mind as well as the body.

A. Studies show that even though physical activity is minimal among working adults, a moderate walking pace instead of extreme aerobic activity is more beneficial to the health of both the mind as well as the body.
"Both" and "As well as" are redundant and only one of them should be used. If "Both" is used, it should be paired with "and".

B. Rather than extreme aerobic activity, studies show that even though physical activity is minimal among working adults, a moderate walking pace is more beneficial to both the health of the mind and the body.
The modifier "Rather than extreme aerobic activity" should be followed by "moderate walking" instead of "studies show". Also "the health of" applies to both "mind" & "body". So ideally it should come before the "both" in the sentence.

C. Studies have shown that walking, finding it to be more beneficial to the health of both the mind as well as the body, at a moderate pace, even though physical activity is minimal among working adults, is beneficial to both the health of the mind and the body.
"at moderate pace" is a dangling modifier and should be closer to "walking". The "both" part at the end has same error as in B.

D. While physical activity is minimal among working adults, studies show that a moderate walking pace rather than extreme aerobic activity has been found as more beneficial to the health of both the mind and the body.
"While" is used to usually signify "during that time". The sentence is trying to show some contrast, so While is not ideal. "Studies show" and "has been found" seem redundant. Either "Studies Show" or "Studies Find" and ideally not both.

E. Even though physical activity is minimal among working adults, studies show that a moderate walking pace rather than extreme aerobic activity is more beneficial to the health of both the mind and the body.
E has the correct opening subordinate clause and uses parallelism in Both & And properly.

In my opinion, E should be the right answer from the explanation mentioned above.

Thanks.

yep I have to correct. Although in my explanation for answer choice B, I assumed and have written elements of 'both' are parallel, I overlooked that they are indeed not parallel.
E seems to be the next best option ..I was expecting "physical activity is minimal" to be a part of the studies and I don't know what about the contrast but I am still not comfortable with even though physical activity is minimal, studies show. Hopefully Empower experts EMPOWERgmatVerbal can help clarify

E. Even though physical activity is minimal among working adults, studies show that a moderate walking pace rather than extreme aerobic activity is more beneficial to the health of both the mind and the body.

Correct answer: E

A: Incorrect use of idiom "Both ... and"
B: Incorrect comparison: "Rather than extreme aerobic activity, studies show ...." Incorrect placement of "both": should be the health of BOTH X and Y, not BOTH the health of X and Y
C: Clunky and wordy with awkward modifiers. Incorrect placement of "both" as in B.
D: Redundant "studies show .... has been found as"
E: Correct

E. Even though physical activity is minimal among working adults, studies show that a moderate walking pace rather than extreme aerobic activity is more beneficial to the health of both the mind and the body.

Since the entire sentence is underlined, let's examine each sentence on its own.

Option A has a lot of clauses strung together with multiple subjects and verbs (studies show, physical activity is, a moderate walking pace . . . activity is). While, as written, it is not grammatically incorrect, it definitely doesn’t practice the principal of concision. The comparative phrase “both” is combined with “as well as,” which does not follow the idiom. This cannot be the correct answer.

Option B has the phrase “rather than,” which is used to contrast two things, followed by “studies show that even though.” “Even though” is also used as a contrast, and it doesn’t make sense to sandwich a subject and verb between two different contrasting phrases. “To both the health of the mind and the body” is not parallel. “The health” would need to follow the “and” to make this phrase parallel. This cannot be the best answer.

Option C has two nonessential clauses crammed into this sentence, making it hard to follow the essential part of the sentence (“Studies have shown that walking at a moderate pace is beneficial to both the health of the mind and the body”). This lacks clarity. Additionally, “to both the health of the mind and the body” is not parallel. “The health” would need to follow the “and” to make this phrase parallel. This cannot be the best answer.

Option D seems to be in good shape until we get to the phrase “has been found as.” This is the incorrect usage of an idiom. The correct idiom is “found to be.” This cannot be the correct answer.

We have eliminated four answers. Option E has comparative phrases in the correct location, practices concision, and follows parallel structure and correct idioms. E is the correct option.

Studies show that even though physical activity is minimal among working adults, a moderate walking pace instead of extreme aerobic activity is more beneficial to the health of both the mind as well as the body.

structure is studies show even though A, B is more beneficial for both X & Y. It is easy to eliminate AC's that do not follow both x & Y , eliminate A

A. Studies show that even though physical activity is minimal among working adults, a moderate walking pace instead of extreme aerobic activity is more beneficial to the health of both the mind as well as the body.
both the mind as well as the body - > incorrect

B. Rather than extreme aerobic activity, studies show that even though physical activity is minimal among working adults, a moderate walking pace is more beneficial to both the health of the mind and the body.
although it has inverted structure, this option follow the structure that studies show that even though activity is minimal, a moderate walking pace is more beneficial to both health of the mind and health of the body rather than extreme aerobic activity

C. Studies have shown that walking, finding it to be more beneficial to the health of both the mind as well as the body, at a moderate pace, even though physical activity is minimal among working adults, is beneficial to both the health of the mind and the body.
misplaced modifier - finding it to be more beneficial to the health of both the mind as well the body

D. While physical activity is minimal among working adults, studies show that a moderate walking pace rather than extreme aerobic activity has been found as more beneficial to the health of both the mind and the body.
this option suggests that while physical activity is minimal, studies show ... the fact of physical activity is shown parallel to studies instead of being part of the study

E. Even though physical activity is minimal among working adults, studies show that a moderate walking pace rather than extreme aerobic activity is more beneficial to the health of both the mind and the body.
here the fact of physical activity is minimal is shown as an contrast to studies ... so if physical activity is not minimal, studies will not show?

B is the answer!

Hello snoep!

You were really close! Keep in mind the "both X and Y" parallelism issue you talk about in the beginning. Option B has a parallelism problem:

both the health of the mind and the body.

It looks like you eventually found the correct choice, so good for you!

Here's my analysis
IMO E:
Studies show that even though physical activity is minimal among working adults, a moderate walking pace instead of extreme aerobic activity is more beneficial to the health of both the mind as well as the body.

A. Studies show that even though physical activity is minimal among working adults, a moderate walking pace instead of extreme aerobic activity is more beneficial to the health of both the mind as well as the body. -Rather should be preferred over instead since we are doing a comparison. . And then comes the idiom error. both...as well as.

B. Rather than extreme aerobic activity, studies show that even though physical activity is minimal among working adults, a moderate walking pace is more beneficial to both the health of the mind and the body. - Rather clause follows by studies which is illogical. Misplaced clause

C. Studies have shown that walking, finding it to be more beneficial to the health of both the mind as well as the body, at a moderate pace, even though physical activity is minimal among working adults, is beneficial to both the health of the mind and the body.-Don't even bother reading such awkward construction.

D. While physical activity is minimal among working adults, studies show that a moderate walking pace rather than extreme aerobic activity has been found as more beneficial to the health of both the mind and the body. -Redundancy issue - We don't need " has been found " since studies already show.

E. Even though physical activity is minimal among working adults, studies show that a moderate walking pace rather than extreme aerobic activity is more beneficial to the health of both the mind and the body. IMOO

- what follows "instead of" is not a noun/noun phrase, but a whole clause. In such situations that involve contrasting comparisons, we need to use the 'rather than' structure.

B. Rather than extreme aerobic activity, studies show that even though physical activity is minimal among working adults, a moderate walking pace is more beneficial to both the health of the mind and the body.
- the 'rather than' structure must be used to highlight a contrast between similar items. in (B), 'extreme aerobic activity' is being contrasted with 'studies'. This contrast does not make any sense.

C. Studies have shown that walking, finding it to be more beneficial to the health of both the mind as well as the body, at a moderate pace, even though physical activity is minimal among working adults, is beneficial to both the health of the mind and the body.
- we have a modifier error here: (C) introduces the idea that 'walking' is what 'finds' something as beneficial. This does not make any sense.

D. While physical activity is minimal among working adults, studies show that a moderate walking pace rather than extreme aerobic activity has been found as more beneficial to the health of both the mind and the body.
- the present perfect tense 'has been found' indicates that the 'moderate walking pace' has taken the form of 'more beneficial health'. This does not make any sense.

E. Even though physical activity is minimal among working adults, studies show that a moderate walking pace rather than extreme aerobic activity is more beneficial to the health of both the mind and the body. - has no error. Hence, (E) is the right answer choice.
