Hey everyone,

It’s been around 7–8 years since I last studied for an exam like this, and I’m finding it tough to get back into the groove. I recently took a mock test and realized I have a lot of work to do—couldn’t solve most of the questions. I either got lost while reading the long Verbal passages or couldn’t recall even the basic formulas for Quant and Data Insights.

To get back on track, I’ve enrolled in the 4-month e-GMAT course and just started my prep.

I’d love to hear from others:

Have you taken the GMAT (especially the Focus Edition) recently?

What was your experience like the first time you attempted GMAT Exam or started prep?

Did you use any online prep courses or just self-study?

Would really appreciate any tips, motivation, or resources that worked for you!

Thanks in advance!
Hi, Planning to take GMAT in 20 days. 1 definite learning, the stronger your foundations are, the easier it is for you. I did the mistake of rushing through the concepts, which costed me a lot of time. So, Dont want this to happen to anyone else...

Definitely use GMAT club for experts solutions / tests / Qs etc. Improving your focus is key as the test is very time pressured. Keep working on your emotional regulation parallelly.

Hi Garima25,

First and foremost, don’t let the thought of returning to academics after 7–8 years make you doubt your capability or become an excuse for you to underperform. In fact, with maturity and experience on your side, you may be even more capable now than you were back then.

Yes, life comes with more responsibilities as we move forward—but that’s part of the journey. Many top global business schools actively value candidates with diverse and seasoned professional backgrounds like yours. What you’ll need to complement that is a strong GMAT score—one that reflects your unique potential, not someone else’s timeline.

I’d also urge you to be cautious when reading “success stories” online. Some aspirants claim to achieve stellar scores in a month, while others take two years. Both extremes can be misleading. GMAT prep is not a one-size-fits-all process. The key lies in rationally assessing how your current skill set aligns with the GMAT’s demands, and then crafting a focused, strategic plan that works for you.

Your journey is your own—own it with confidence and clarity. Let me know if you’d like help planning that strategy.

Happy to help if and when you need it! :)

I'd add a couple of things:

Don't take practice tests until you have had time to "re-activate your test-taking muscles". You're just get back in the groove and you're fighting three battles at the same time.
1) Learning (or relearning) the concepts especially in quant
2) Getting your head wrapped around the GMAT's unusual way of testing you -- it's unlike any test you've taken before
3) Warming up your test taking muscles -- they're probably very rusty and need gradual reawakening.
