(15*360)/100 = 54 degrees.

How I do it:

How many degree to represent an item that is 15%

15/100 = x/360
360 x 15/100 = x
x = 54

The annual budget of a certain college is to be shown on a circle graph. If the size of each sector of the graph is to be proportional to the amount of the budget it represents , how many degrees of the circle should be used to represent an item that is 15 percent of the budget?

(A) 15°
(B) 36°
(C) 54°
(D) 90°
(E) 150°

(A) is a very nice trap answer if one if running out of time and doesn't think it through!

Anyways, I think the best approach is that of blendercroix - short a sweet proportion.

1. 360 degrees in circle
2. half of 360 is 180; half of 100 is 50; therefore, 180degrees is used to represent 50% of the budget
3. half of 180 is 90; half of 50 is 25
4. half of 90 is 45; half of 25 is 12.5(2.5% lower than 15%)
5. you know it is within the range of 45-60, so eliminate the answer choices that are either too low or high

therefore; the answer is 54%(C)

Since the circular graph has to show 15% on the graph paper. So it has to have a same proportion on the graph
Hence 15/100 = x/360
x = 54

To find the number of degrees that corresponds to 15 percent of the circle, we can set up the following proportion:

15 percent / 100 percent = x degrees / 360 degrees

Simplifying the proportion, we have:

0.15 = x / 360

To solve for x, we can multiply both sides of the equation by 360:

0.15 * 360 = x
54 = x

Therefore, 15 percent of the circle corresponds to 54 degrees, which corresponds to option (C).
