The average of 5 distinct positive integers if 33. What are the maximum and minimum possible values of the median of these 5 numbers if the average of the three largest numbers is 39?

A. 38 and 28
B. 38 and 27
C. 38 and 26
D. 37 and 26
E. 36 and 26

The sum of all 5 numbers is 5*33 = 165. The sum of the largest is 3*39 = 117. Then we know the smallest two numbers add up to 165 - 117 = 48. If we want to minimize the median, we can let the two smallest numbers be 23 and 25. Then the median can be 26.

For the highest median, we can declare the biggest three numbers as 38, 39, and 40 as they must have an average of 39. Then 38 is the highest median.

Ans: B
