Can someone help me explain why C is not the correct answer? My reasoning is that investing in Djboutin is not a good strategy for the company at a whole, but it still happens, so probably because personal intention of CEO?

Thanks much,

The CEO of the mining company has been using the company’s resources for his own personal gains. In the past one year, the mining company has invested in 13 mines in Djboutin, the country of birth of the CEO. The CEO has also mentioned in several interviews that, at a later point in his career, he plans to stand for the Presidency of Djboutin.

Which of the following is an assumption that the argument depends on?

(A) The investments in the mines in Djboutin make good business sense.

(B) It is cheaper to conduct mining operations in Djboutin than in most other countries that the mining company operates in.

(C) To conduct mining operations in Djboutin will require heavy investment in a particular type of machinery that will not be of any use in the mining company’s
mines in other countries.

(D) It is not the Board of Directors of the mining company that decides which mines to invest in.

(E) There is no unforeseen event in the future that will dissuade the CEO from standing for the Presidency of Djboutin.

Official Explanation

Answer: D

When the argument concludes that the CEO is using the mining company for his own personal gains, it is obviously assuming that it was the CEO who decided to invest in all those mines in Djboutin. What if it was somebody else, such as the Board of Directors, who made this decision? Then, it would not be fair to blame the CEO for the same. Thus, the argument assumes that this is not the case—that no other entity (other than the CEO) made this decision. D states this and should be the correct answer.

(A) It actually weakens the argument by suggesting that the CEO is thinking about the company’s good and not his own personal welfare.

(B) Same as A above.

(C) It might still make sense to invest in this machinery depending on the potential of the mines in Djboutin. The point is, this makes no difference to the argument that the CEO has been using the mining company for his personal gains.

(E) What happens in the future is not our concern. The CEO at the moment is definitely interested in standing for the Presidency of Djboutin in the future and that’s all that matters for the purpose of our argument.

Option C talks about how it could be a heavy investment but does not provide full context if that could be beneficial for the comany still or no. If yes, then shows CEO in good loght if not then its for his personal means. So, because of the incomplete information C is not a good choice over D
