Re: The company's policy of encouraging its employees to volunteer at loca [#permalink]

I somehow liked the question but I have a query.
Do I read the sentence as " The company's policy of encouraging its employees to volunteer at local charities, and the company's policy of sponsoring a number of charitable events, is an example of the company's commitment to social responsibility " ?

Remove the following part and check -

The company's policy of encouraging its employees to volunteer at local charities, and sponsoring a number of charitable events, is an example of the company's commitment to social responsibility.

Hope this helps.

I find the explanation here not sufficient. The company's policy of encouraging it's employees to volunteer and sponsoring a number of charitable events should be followed by are.
the subject verb mismatch is happening here in case of is as and adds two singular subjects into a plural subject.

I don't understand how D is correct.

D. "The company's policy of [...], and sponsoring a number of charitable events, is an example of the company's commitment to social responsibility"

This seems like two separate examples of commitment to social responsibility. I had selected B given I understood the policy as being volunteering + sponsoring, in which case the singular subject verb agreement makes sense. In this case however, it is the company policy of volunteering and the company's sponsoring events, which is two examples and thus should make the verb plural?

Hello kelly_jacques,

We hope this finds you well.

To answer your query, the intended meaning here is that the "policy" is one example of the company's commitment to social responsibility, but the policy consists of two parts - "encouraging its employees to volunteer at local charities" and "sponsoring a number of charitable events".

We hope this helps.
All the best!

The company's policy of encouraging its employees to volunteer at local charities, along with sponsoring a number of charitable events, are an example of the company's commitment to social responsibility.

(A) along with sponsoring a number of charitable events, an example of the company's
subject is policy(singular). usage of "are" is incorrect.

(B) as well as to sponsor a number of charitable events, is an example of the company's
the parallelism over here is "to volunteer at local charities" with "to sponsor a number of charitable events"
it doesn't make sense that a company will encourage its employees to sponsor charitable events and that will show the company's commitment to social responsibility.

(C) as well as sponsoring a number of charitable events, are an example of the company's
subject is policy(singular). usage of "are" is incorrect.

(D) and sponsoring a number of charitable events, is an example of the company's
correct

(E) and sponsors a number of charitable events, are an example of the company's
"sponsors a number of charitable events" is not parallel with "encouraging its employees to volunteer at local charities"
