D
The word ‘gone’ indicates the same tense as the first line ( has avoided ) and is therefore parallel

I second you, with (D) as well !!!

D. has avoided the cumbersome process of putting her complaints in writing and submitting them to her immediate supervisor and gone

E. avoided the cumbersome process of putting her complaints in writing and submitting them to her immediate supervisor and gone

D is preferred to E because definite time period is not specified in the sentence.
Present Perfect is preferred in those cases.

veritasprep Official Solution

The key to solving this problem is recognizing that the director personnel did two things:

1) she avoided the cumbersome process

2) she went directly to the board

These two actions are directly related in the same timeframe (going directly to the board was her way of avoiding the process), and so therefore you need to have these two actions in parallel verb tenses. A quick scan of the answer choices shows that only (D) accomplishes that:

(A) has avoided...and go

(B) avoided...and go

(C) has avoided...and go

(D) has avoided...and gone

(E) avoided...and gone

Note that with the present perfect "has avoided..." the word "has" is implied before the second verb, so for those choices you really have:

(A) has avoided...and (has) go

(C) has avoided...and (has) go

(D) has avoided...and (has) gone

From this list, only choice (D) has parallel verbs, so (D) is the correct answer.

Can someone explain the usage of the present perfect tense and when that is appropriate? Why can't it be the simple past 'avoided' here?
