The figure above shows the shape and dimensions of the inside of a container that has a flat rectangular top and semicircular ends perpendicular to the top. When the container is loaded to its exact capacity with slag that weighs 50 pounds per cubic foot, what will be the approximate weight, in tons, of the slag in the container?
(1 ton = 2000 pounds)


A. 2
B. 4
C. 6
D. 8
E. 10


The container shown is a half of a cylinder, with the height of 10 feet and the radius of a base of 8/2=4 feet. Its volume is \(\frac{1}{2}\pi{r^2}h=80\pi\) cubic foot.

The weight of the slag is \(80\pi*50=4,000\pi\) pounds, which is \(\frac{4,000\pi}{2,000}=2\pi\approx{6.28}\) tons.

Answer: C.

its basically a cylinder half
1/2 * pi * r^2 *h
r=4 , h=10
area = 80pi
and it will contain 80pi*50 ; 4000pi lbs
4000 * pi /2000 = ~ 6
