Official Answer (OA) – C
Concepts Tested – Redundancy, Meaning
When the ‘geologists’ have already been mentioned in the introductory clause, it
is redundant to again use ‘they’ in the next clause. Hence eliminate A and D.

E distorts the meaning by suggesting that the geologists came this far for a
particular purpose, hence eliminate E

Between B and C, ‘coming’ suggests that the activity is still continuing whereas
the activity is already over. The scientists have already come this far, which is
why they do not want to return before collecting the rock samples. C gets this
right by using the phrase ‘having come’ to modify the geologists and is the best
answer.

The geologists coming this far, they did not want to return without collecting the rock samples

(A) The geologists coming this far, they
(B) Coming this far, the geologists felt that they
(C) Having come this far, the geologists
(D) The geologists, having come this far, they
(E) The geologists came this far, so that they

In A "they" is not necessary, B changes the meaning with "felt that".
Again in D "they" is not necessary, E is logically flawed ("so"): it seems that the geologists came this far because they did not want to return etc...
IMO C

BTW, thank you for those questions!

Yeah, C is the right choice.

Btw I second Zarrolou! Thanks for the questions Carcass
