The graph above is a circle graph with 9 sectors, each representing an area in which the U.S. government spent money (in millions of dollars) during the 2006 fiscal year.
Use the drop-down menus to fill in the blanks in each of the following statements based on the information given by the graph.
1. If Medicare and Medicaid spending in 2005 were $824,400,000, spending in this sector approximately from 2005 to 2006.
2. The sectors of comprise approximately 25% of the total amount spent by the U.S. Government in 2006.
1) Decrease by 18.62% since in 2005-824 million and in 2006-670.9 So change is (-824+670.9)/670.9 = -18.62% 2)Total of all the sections is 2648.2 so 25% of it is 662.05, which is roughly equal to sum of Social security(586.1) & Transportation(76.9) 3)Total amount spent on the four lowest is 228.5 And the average of top 2 is (804.1+670.9)/2 is 737.5 so the difference between both is 737.5-228.5= 509
1) Since we know that it decreased, and the two possible answers are -18 -22 percent (aprox), its just easier to multiply 824 times 0.8. And see if the number we get is higher or lower than the number we have in the graph. 824 million *0.8 is about 660. Which is less than what we have in the graph. Therefore option D 2) In the graph we see that 25% is about 670MM (from medicare and mediaid). If we check the sum of all the options, the closer one is Social security and transportation with about 660MM. Option E 3) This is just arithmetic, the average is (804+670)/2 and the sum of the other categories is about 239. Therefore is 509MM dollars less. Option A
isn't answers for the first part should be {decreased by 22.88%}??

No, you have taken wrong base. The denominator will always be the initial. So \(\frac{671-824}{824}=-\frac{153}{824}\) ~ -18.6%, that is a decrease of 18.66%
