I am responding to a pm from fameatop:

Split #1: we use "like" for comparing nouns (X, like Y, is Q). We use "as" for comparing verbs/predicates (X does P, as does Y). Choices (A) & (D) use "as" with a noun --- these are incorrect. The structure "as with [noun]" is highly suspicious --- I don't believe I've ever seen this correct on the GMAT, so (B) is out as well. Only (C) & (E) survive this first split.

Split #2: the order of "both" and "with". The sentence wants to say "with" two things --- P = "the time dedicated to the endeavor" and Q = "the resources dedicated to the endeavor". Obvious, we are not going to repeat that long common phrase "dedicated to the endeavor" --- we only use that once. The question is --- where should be put the word "both"? If we use the word "both" after "with" --- "with both P and Q" --- this correctly emphasizes: with both of the items. By contrast, if we put "both" before the word "with", that implies that the two elements of the "both" are two prepositional phrases, the first beginning with "with" and the second, presumably, beginning with another preposition --- "both with P and under K" ---- technically, if both terms have the same preposition, we would need to repeat that, to emphasize the same preposition is coming twice --- "both with P and with Q" --- of course, that's terribly wordy. The word "both" is the "joining word", the word that introduces some sort of parallelism --- a common word applying to both terms of the parallelism can appear once before the joining word, or in each term after the joining word, either once outside the parallel structure or before each term inside the parallel structure, either "with both P and Q" or "both with P and with Q". See this blog for more info:
http://magoosh.com/gmat/2012/common-par ... orrection/
The structure "both with P and Q" is incorrect, a violation of parallelism, and choices (C) & (D) make this mistake, so both of these are incorrect.

The only answer choice that survives both splits is (E), the OA.

Let me know if anyone reading this has any further questions.

Mike

C modifies the indicators.

Another possible issue with C might be parallelism.

(C) increases both with the time and resources

(E) increases both with the time and the resources

I think in both options we are modifying "The growth rate of a startup business", and comparing it to "other performance indicators".

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only reason why C is not correct is parallelism like Swoosh617 said. If they added "the" at the end, the answer would have been fine IMO.

The main thing that separated C and E was the parallelism of "with the time and the resources. "

In my opinion, The basic difference in using AS and Like is that:
Like, Which is a Preposition, Modifies Nous (Including Gerunds -Ing form), Pronouns, and Noun phrases.
As:, which is Both a Preposition & a conjunction, Modifies nouns, pronouns, and clauses.

In this question,
1: "The growth rate of start up Business" is a noun phrase, Hence preferable comparative marker is Like. Using Like, we can compare Growth rate (which is one performance indicator) with other performance Indicators.
2: Both X & Y is the correct idiomatic form, which eliminate A, B, & C.

If C had had "the" before "time, it would have been the right answer. I dont seem to find any problem with the modfiers. Can someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

growth rate Vs Performance indicators - both are nouns, hence need "Like" for comparison - this eliminates A,B and D
C and E both use "like"
C - both with the time and resources - not parallel
E - both with the time and the resources - parallel and correct

C. Like other performance indicators, the growth rate of a startup business generally increases both with the time and

You are absolutely right in that there is no problem with the modifier. Option C lacks parallelism because of missing "the" at the end of option.

"Both" and "Only", modify the words immediately following them. C and D are out because both with.
Out of A, B and E. E is the best.

growth rate is one indicator out of many other performance indicators. so parallelism is b/w noun not action. hence "as" is wrong. Like is required.

As with other performance indicators, the growth rate of a startup business generally increases with both the time and
same as A.

Like other performance indicators, the growth rate of a startup business generally increases both with the time and
both with time and with resources would be correct. but this choice is missing "with" after and.

As other performance indicators, the growth rate of a startup business generally increases both with the time and the
same as C

The growth rate of a startup business, like other performance indicators, generally increases with both the time and the
this choice corrects both issues mentioned above.

Are C and E only different because of parallelism? Or there are other subtle differences that I am missing out?

Both X and Y

Eliminate C - both with the time and
D - both with the time and the

As is used to compare clauses and like is used to compare nouns
The G rate and Other P indicators both are nouns hence use Like

Eliminate A B and D

Also with E “Both the time and the resources” is perfect

I understand that E is the correct answer but I have a quick doubt regarding option B. Can't the logic of Ellipsis be applied here?

Will it make it a contender if we take that into account?

B. As it is with other performance indicators, the growth rate of a startup business generally increases with both the time and

The only problem I have with accepting E as the answer is the use of like. Startup business, like other indicators. How can we be sure that the indicator refer with the use of like to the rates and not to the businesses?
