Hey anyone here know if the adcom prefer more recent outside the country experience or can they be from childhood? I have lived in quite a few several years in several regions of the world when I was young before coming to the U.S. but I don't know if they want something more recent....

As long as you can reflect properly on the learning, any experience outside of your home country should be applicable. Usually childhood experiences are not so easy to reflect on, hence people go with more recent experiences, but if you have a strong experience with good learning that go a few years in the past, dont shirk from sharing it.

Thanks Vgeri,

I was initially planning to arrange reference from my colleague in the current company, defnitely not line manager. However, my colleague, whom I had been constantly updating about my MBA plans, had to go on emergency vacation due to a personal emergency and he won't be back before the R2 deadlines :( Sadly, he won't be able to access internet during this duration.

Hence, I started thinking of other alternative. Additionally, I had previously asked my former colleagues to provide me references and they know me a lot better and could back up my start-up experiences with anecdotes. My current company is a consulting firm. Not sure if I should wait for my current colleague to be back sooner or approach my former colleague. Should I ask LBS about this? :?

Agreed with vgeri on this -- you can use previous colleagues/managers for both recommendations, but not having a current employer reference can potentially be a disadvantage. Generally, what I've seen is when previous employers are used, the reasons for not using current employer recommendations are explained in the optional essay. If you have not been with your current employer for long (less than a year, for example), that's another reason that is often explained in the optional essay.

From your time at LBS, what courses do you find or alternatively have heard of as distinctly good/well-taught/great professors? From my conversations with friends at LBS, some finance courses seem to be highly sought after. But I'm looking at management consulting and wanted to see what relevant subjects or professors stand out. Couldn't get anyone to shed light on this. This will also be useful for my essays - I'd like to show my research and understanding of the program.

Love to hear your thoughts. Thanks

We're only just beginning to learn about specific electives as we plan out the next few terms, so most of what I've heard is in relation to first-year electives only. The ones of particular interest in first year have been Corporate Strategy and Managing Corporate Turnarounds, though these are prerequisite electives anyway for the more extensive second-year portfolio.

In terms of professors, Julian Birkinshaw, Costas Markides and Michael Jacobides seem to be our most well-known professors in Strategic and International Management.

Reviewing the Survival Guide though provides a rather shocking dose of reality! Suddenly, the London Business School admissions offer makes me feel frighteningly poor!

Yeah, I remember that feeling last year. :)

Still, despite the growing loan balances and the high living costs, no regrets at all. I have only known my fellow classmates for three months, but I feel like I've known them for years. London is a fantastic city that's worthy of its reputation. And since this is probably the last time I'll be in university again, student life has been a nice break from work (even if I'm getting even less sleep now than before).

happy Christmas all LBS admits and applicants (to those who celebrate it)!

anyone received an email regarding annual fund scholarships? I have! a very nice x-mas present indeed! :)

Congrats vgeri! :woohoo

For those waiting on scholarship decisions, did the offer email have any information on scholarship announcement dates? This is what last year's email said, so the process should likely be the same:

Quote:
Scholarships: Our extensive Scholarship Portfolio includes Annual Fund awards,
class bursaries and corporate scholarships. Your application will be considered
for our Annual Fund awards automatically and scholars will be notified individually.
Please note that if you have not heard by 5pm (UK time), on the 23rd December,
you should assume that you have been unsuccessful. You will have the opportunity to
apply for the other scholarships in the Portfolio at a later date. We will invite you
to apply for these next year.

has anyone noticed that the tuition fee noted on the website has changed to £49,900???!!! Last time i checked it was 45!

I know it used to have a disclaimer saying it was under review, but a 10% hike in recession year is a little steep??

Great!
I used around 120 words to tell the experiences, and around 30 words to reflect.
I feel that the shorter/stronger the reflection is, the better.

Thanks prashok. There was no such information in the email this year. But it looks like they have announced by the same date! - Dec 23rd. A couple of others have also reported getting scholarships.

Hoping to get some assistance from the remaining ones that we can apply!

A few of us MBA2011s were discussing this, and we were thinking that the weak GBP may have played a factor. Maybe the admin heard the Europeans (and some of the Americans that hedged the GBP at 1.40-1.50) bragging about how much cheaper LBS was this year... :o

For the extracurricular activities part, did everyone answer this question in essay form. Or was it standard list that is activity, number of hours of involvement, etc. Please answer. Thanks

Hey guys,
Just joined the club. Digging deep to get my apps out before R2 deadline.
Background: 25/M mechanical engineer working in the industry before shifting lanes to get into Investment banking. Almost 3 yrs WE.
Query: When they say -- If you have any significant gaps in your employment history, please tell us why on a separate sheet. What does significant gaps mean?
I have a 5 month gap and frankly do not have much to show as i was just taking exams in that break before shifting sectors. So can I just ignore that and not mention it at all or will that harm my prospects and instead am I supposed to talk up that break in some way?

Thanks.

@CulesRules I think you should apply a little bit of common sense and discretion. If you are 25 your total WE is probably not more than 5 years (probably less). In that case 5 months is a relatively long gap and you should mention it. I don't believe that the ad-com will hold it against you if you have a reasonable explanation for it.

@Ari123 I believe the essay format is the standard here. I dont know of anybody that has done it any other way.
