The 'main idea' is the subject, and it is singular. Cross out A.
The use of defend+ing is incorrect when the idea of the clause is not complete. 'Defending' what? Cross out B. due to incorrect verb structure.
An essay can't defend something or have a main idea since it is an inanimate object. cross out C and D.

meaning change and redundant

(D) The professor’s essays have a main idea of the defense of the concept of free-market economics. Incorrect

meaning change

(E) The main idea of the professor’s essays is a defense of the concept of free-market economics. Incorrect

The main idea .. is a defense .............. - sounds wrong, idea cant be a defense

IMO E is correct because it's the only option with the correct parallel structure. B is close, but 'defending' is a gerund, that could not be parallel to the plain noun 'idea'. Gerunds should be parallel to action nouns or other gerunds.
