SV error - The main idea ...........are .......

(B) The main idea of the professor’s essays is defending free-market economic concepts. Correct

(C) The professor’s essays have defending the concept of free-market economics as their main idea. Incorrect

meaning change and redundant

(D) The professor’s essays have a main idea of the defense of the concept of free-market economics. Incorrect

meaning change

(E) The main idea of the professor’s essays is a defense of the concept of free-market economics. Incorrect

The main idea .. is a defense .............. - sounds wrong, idea cant be a defense

IMO E is correct because it's the only option with the correct parallel structure. B is close, but 'defending' is a gerund, that could not be parallel to the plain noun 'idea'. Gerunds should be parallel to action nouns or other gerunds.
