Sorry, I still did not give my choice. I think the correct answer is D, not B.
@asax: You should review the question again, which source of this question is and find the OA visually (with you)

Require sb to provide st

So, the remain choices are B and E. Between "so as to" & "so that"

"so that" + clause is used to express the meaning of intention
"so + adj/adv + that" is used to express the consequences of one thing's quality or emphasize the extremely of quality
"so + ADJ + as to" is the CORRECT idiom, not the "so as to", in expressing the quality of subject to consequence of st that result from the subject mentioned.
Still not clear .. can you please elaborate a bit more

"so as to" is incorrect idiom.

You can find the usage of "so as + adj + to", "so that", or "so + adj/adv + that" here

There is some basic issue with the transcript. Is the word provide part of the underlines portion or not? Honestly not worth depending upon examples sent by somebody else, unless it can be verified by the poster.

roposal requiring certain orchestras provide musicians with unpaid leave so as to care for sick family members.

Ain't option D confusing as they can be referring to orchestras or musicians?

Btw I am going with B here.

We have seen multiple instances in which the phrase so as to has been used by GMAT test writers. The usage is not incorrect in general. However for a particular context it could be problematic. Could you refer to the particular case in which MGMAT mentioned that so as to is wrong?

Dear expert GMATNinja, sayantanc2k,

Can you guide me on how to realize the source of each GMAT question right at its page?

As I have a habit of practicing questions suggested in "My Workbook", I usually click on the link and then get directed to the question's page without knowing its source. It was really irritating when I attempted an unofficial question, got that question wrong, and still could not find satisfying explanation after reading all of the comments. I must admit that sometimes "correct answers" of these types of unofficial questions are quite reasonable, but sometimes..... I just cannot understand why... Then I think I waste my time on such questions.

I know that I could try the latest responded questions on this page https://gmatclub.com/forum/gmat-sentenc ... on-sc-138/, but I still prefer My Workbook, because I can have statistics of my performance there.

Looking forward to your response. Thanks alot!

I think that the main problem with B is that it can be inferred that the orchestras will be the ones who take care of the families, where as in answer choice D it is clear that the musicians will be the ones who take care of their families

Only option B and D are close.
In option D , "....so that they ..." ---> "they" does not have a clear referent. "they" can refer to "musicians" or "orchestras". Hence option D is wrong.

Option B is correct.

This seems to be a spliced version of an official question posted here. Pretty sure the OA should be D, not B (as has been marked here).
