Option E is wrong ,because you cannot join people with an ideal .People come together based on an idea .
D is the only option which uses on .
Yes, the question could have been framed well.

In option D, what is the verb of the sentence?

In answer choice D, the verb is united. In other words, united acts as the verb for the subject: The 19th-century Russian composers known as "The Five".

I was close on this one

Intent: The 19th-century Russian composers known as "The Five"
How they were united ??

A. were united by their holding
They are still not getting united or holding, incorrect tense

No two tasks are happening, incorrect tense

C. united each other with
united/ each other redundant

D. united based on
Best among the rest.

E. were united with
They were not united with a person, rather than an idea -> Out

The question is probably written incorrectly by the poster, as the source (Kaplan) can't write such grammatically poor question. Waste of 1.5 minutes

I suspect this question is from old version of Kaplan book. Here is new version of this question from Kaplan: https://gmatclub.com/forum/the-19th-cen ... 16014.html
