Re: The number 100 is what percent greater than x? [#permalink]

We need to find X to answer the question
From first statement :
150 = 5x + x% of 5x

150 = 5x+x/100*5X

15000 = 500x+5x^2
x^2 +100x + 3000 = 0 Equation from 1st statement here we will get one positive and one negative value of x, so this is insufficient

From statement two we know x>0, it is insufficient alone to answer the question

Bur when we combine both statement we'll get value of x
so answer is C, both statements together can answer the question

Hi SonamRa, thank you for the explanation! But I'm a little confused: shouldn't it be x^2+100x - 3000=0?

Can't we eliminate the option that x<0? (as the stem says "x percent greater that x")
(i.e., in that case A is the right answer)

could you please advise as well?

Since it is already being said in the first statement x is also a value of percentage, isn't it understood that x would always be greater than 0 ?

Hi

Percentages can be negative, but not something that would be the difference between choosing A and choosing C.

I don’t think you would see such a thing in exam on two accounts.
a) Negative percentage making all the difference.
b) The values of x are -124.1234…. and 24.1234…. Just shows that question has been made without giving sufficient thought.

Best avoided.

(1) 150 is x percent greater than 5x.
(2) x > 0

Are You Up For the Challenge: 700 Level Questions

x^2 +100x +3000=0

Since the values x cannot be equal nd they have to be positive and negative
we cannot conclude percentages can be negative there is a possibility

x>0 clearly insufficient
However combined we get a definitive value of x therefore IMO C
