The number of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, infections in the U.S. increased by more than twice between 1999 and 2005.

a) increased by more than twice between
b) increased by more than twice from
c) doubled between
d) more than doubled from
e) more than doubled between

eliminated all options containing the preposition 'from' -> removes B, and D.

increased by more than twice - is the same as "more than doubled", the former being wordy.

combining "more than doubled" and "between" gives us option E.

ergo, E.

How can the answer be E ?

'increase by more than twice' means now the number is more than 3x, if it was x
'more than doubled between' means now the number is more than 2x, if it was x.

So, there is a change in meaning. Why is E favored since we don't know what the right value is. I am confused because after reading E, I couldn't decide whether the sentence was talking about 2x or 3x.

Yes, I made a call and picked E, but there is no logic to pick E without the baseline knowledge of what the author was trying to say.

The number of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, infections in the U.S. increased by more than twice between 1999 and 2005.

What follows the underlined portion are two different time frame markers; the event being described in the event took place within this time period. Hence, we need to use ''between''.

Since (B) and (D) does not have ''between'', we can eliminate (B) and (D).

a) increased by more than twice between - as compared to (E), (A) is much more wordier.
c) doubled between - when we highlight the difference in the levels of any particular variable across two different time zones, we need to use the comparison word ''more''.
e) more than doubled between - has no error. Besides, the structure ''more than doubled'' lays greater emphasis on the increase in the number of infections, as compared to (C). The goal of this sentence is to lay emphasis on the ''large'' increase in the number of infections. Hence, (E) is the right answer choice.
