The price of copper rose by 25 percent and then fell by 20 percent. The price after these changes was

A. 20 percent greater than the original price
B. 5 percent greater than the original price
C. the same as the original price
D. 5 percent less than the original price
E. 15 percent less than the original price

As per the question, the price 1st rose, which makes the new price as 1.25x. Then when the price falls by 20%, therefore, the new price would be 1.05x.
Hence, B.

Sorry, but that is the wrong approach. You cannot do 1.25x-0.20x. Note, the base of that 20% drop is 125 and not the original x.

Let the price be 100
25% increase means new price is 125
20% drop is on 125, and 20% of 125 is 25. Therefore, reduced price is 125-25 = 100
This is the same as the original price

Thanks

\(+25 - 20 + \frac{(+25)(-20)}{100}\)

\(= 5 - 5\)

\(= 0\), Hence there will be no change , Answer must be (C)
