I believe such questions must be outside the GMAT Syllabus. I might be wrong.

Although the quality may not be GMAC level, this question tests SVA, -ing modifier and Parallelism concepts tested on the GMAT.

PS- This is a self made question.

The study, led by the UCL Genetics Institute, identified close to 200 recurrent genetic mutations inside the virus, and highlighting how they may be adapting and evolving to their human hosts.

A) inside the virus, and highlighting how they may be adapting and evolving to their human hosts. - Parallelism Between Identified and Highlighting. Also, they is used for Virus. We will eliminate this choice.

B) in the virus, not only highlighting how they may be adapting and also evolving to their human hosts. - Incorrect Idiom not only, and also.

C) of the virus, highlighting how it may adapt and also evolve to its human hosts. - And Also is not preferred by GMAT

D) in the virus, and highlighting how it may be adapting and evolving to its human hosts. - Parallelism - Same as A

E) in the virus, highlighting how it may be adapting and evolving to its human hosts. - Correct

I got this answer correct but I have a doubt. Since it is highlighting some fact. So, I think use of simple present is correct and more appropriate. But since the choice “C” contain “Also” due to which this choice become incorrect. Please correct me if my reasoning is wrong

Yes, use of Simple present is correct but identified close to 200 recurrent genetic mutations of the virus is also an issue, adding to the And also error in the sentence.
