How to solve part 1 quickly? Do we actually need a calculator and need to solve the whole question?

No. You don't need a calculator for any part of this question. Just eyeball and use some approximation techniques to get to the solution.

1. The question asks us to determine which of the following statements are true and which are false.

2. The players on the list who played in three decades scored more than 25% of the total points scored by all players on the list. 25% of the total points is equal to \(0.25 * 237644 = 59411\). To play in three decades, the player must begin in the 1970's and end in the 1990's, which happened for: Winkelmann, Dorsey, Jackson, Kolasinski, and Pfeiffer. The total number of points is equal to 68687, which is more than 59411. So, this statement is true.

3. Of the players on the list, more played in the 1990s than played in the 1970s. Lewis, Winkelmann, Cruz, Dorsey, Hughes, Jackson, Kolasinski, and Pfeiffer played in the 1970's (8 people). Larson, Marsh, Gordon, Coietta, Sanders, Moore, Gujral, Pfeiffer, Jah, Schmiedel, Dorsey, Jackson, Kolasinski, and Winkelmann played in the 1990's (14 people). 8 < 14. So, this statement is true.

4. More than 20% of players on the list only played in one decade. 20% of 20 players is 5. Only 3 players played in only one decade: Kleinfeld, Hubbard, and Tennyson. 3 < 5. So, this statement is false.

Bismuth83, Could you please check the first part of the solution, where it is mentioned to consider three decades the player must begin in the 1970s and end in the 1990s, which should not happen in the case of Cruz(1977-1987), Hughes(1977-1988), and Lewis(1976-1986) as mentioned by you. Otherwise, the total number of points which is equal to 68687 is correct.

For option 1

My logic was like

a. Identifying players playing in all three decades.
b. Adding points approximately.. It was coming about 67 k
c. Calculating total was challenge however after glance i could infer that average would be near to 12 k and hence total would be approx 240 k

With these details I could able to conclude that "Yes" will be answer for first option

[color=#0f0f0f]5 playes played in the 3 decades, even if you assume everyone scored equal no. of points it will be 25% of the points, Given they have played for the longest time and a quick look at their points you can say they scored more than their counterparts, so > 25[/color]

Thanks for pointing that out! Looks like I forgot to take them out when putting the list together. However, as you said, the numbers still stay the same.

The solution should be updated now.

When the question talks about players who played in one or more decades,is it ALWAYS referring to calendar decades like:

1970–1979 = the 1970s

1980–1989 = the 1980s

1990–1999 = the 1990s ?
