Re: The table presents data on the 11 U.S. coastal counties that were hit [#permalink]
(TRUE/FALSE) The median number of hurricanes in the Florida counties was higher than the median number of hurricanes in each of the other states’ counties.

1. Median (3 x Florida counties) = 12 (11,12,15)
2. Median (5 x Gulf of Mexico counties) = 11 (11,11,11,12,14)
3. Median (3 x Atlantic Counties) = 13 (13,13,14)

While median number of hurricanes in the Florida counties was higher than the median number of hurricanes in Gulf of Mexico, the same is Not True when it is compared against the median number of hurricanes in counties at Atlantic.

FALSE

(TRUE/FALSE) The counties listed in the table that experienced the three greatest percent changes in population during the period are all part of the coastline region whose listed counties had the greater range in number of hurricanes during the same period.

The the three greatest percent changes in population during the period are all part of the Atlantic coastline region (ie, Dare County, Palm Beach County and Miami-Dade County).

also,

Range in number of hurricanes during the same period for Atlantic Coastline region = 14-11 = 3 (lower range)

Range in number of hurricanes during the same period for Gulf of Mexico Coastline region = 15-11 = 4 (higher range)

(TRUE/FALSE) The Gulf of Mexico coastline region experienced fewer hurricanes per county listed in the table, on average, than did the Atlantic coastline region.

Average hurricanes / county (for Atlantic Region) = 13+14+11+12+13 = 63/5 = 12 3/5
Average hurricanes / county (for Gulf of Mexico Region) = 11+11+15+14+11+12 = 74/6 = 12 1/3

Clearly, the Gulf of Mexico coastline region experienced fewer hurricanes per county, on an average basis.
