What I did was:
( 1 - 5.8/100) * 16,800
= 94.2*168
and then from there I noticed that the last non-zero number would be 6 and will be right behind the decimal place and only C fits that answer

500-600?

You can check difficulty level of a question in the tags above original post. For this one is sub-600. The difficulty level of a question is calculated automatically based on the timer stats from the users which attempted the question.

[1] Set Approximate Values

5.8% -> 6%

$16,800 -> $17,000

[2] Solve

.06*17,000 = ~1,000

17,000 - 1,000 = 16,000

Answer C ($15,825.60)

The value of Maureen's investment portfolio has decreased by 5.8 percent since her initial investment in the portfolio. If her initial investment was $16,800, what is the current value of the portfolio?

A. $7,056.00
B. $14,280.00
C. $15,825.60
D. $16,702.56
E. $17,774.40

(PS07793)

I like the ballparking answers already in the thread, but even those miss an opportunity to use the answer choices and OWN ballparking.

We started with 16800 and lost 5.8%.

A. $7,056.00
B. $14,280.00
C. $15,825.60
D. $16,702.56
E. $17,774.40

A is less than half of what we started with. Wrong.
E is more than we started with. Wrong.
D is barely any drop at all. Wrong.
B is a drop of around 2500. That's more than 10% of what we started with, but we only want a drop of 5.8%. Wrong.

Answer choice C.

To calculate the current value of Maureen's investment portfolio after it has decreased by 5.8 percent, you can use the following formula:

Current Value = Initial Investment * (1 - Percent Decrease)

Where:
- Initial Investment = $16,800
- Percent Decrease = 5.8% = 0.058

Plugging in these values:

Current Value = $16,800 * (1 - 0.058)
Current Value = $16,800 * 0.942
Current Value = $15,825.60

So, the current value of Maureen's investment portfolio is approximately $15,825.60.

Given:The value of Maureen's investment portfolio has decreased by 5.8 percent since her initial investment in the portfolio.
Asked: If her initial investment was $16,800, what is the current value of the portfolio?

The current value of the portfolio = 16800 (100% - 5.8%) = $15,825.60
