Paraphrasing:
* Opportunity is available, where university degree is not needed to pursue some careers and to have paid careers
* Despite good education in university, employer unable to meet the standard requirements, experience, and hunger for success approach from graduates, which universities do not teach.

1. Which of the following statements best sums up the general theme made in the passage?
A. You do not need a degree in order to get a good job.
Correct: as mentioned in the passage,
“There are plenty of careers that do not need a university degree.
In law enforcement, administration, catering, retail, construction and transport,
there are many highly paid careers to be had without the requirement of going to university

B. A degree is no longer the route to a good job.
Wrong: Not 100% but for some profession, “yes” as mentioned in the passage,
but others might be. Passage tone is not contrast to need of university degree.

C. What is taught at university is not particularly relevant to employers.
Wrong: this stem is highlights more about teaching requirements,
in passage, author mentions some basic knowledge which is not taught in universities,
not 100% but some might be useful for employers,
this stem routes to – out of scope, because passage, doesn’t mentioned
about pros and cons of kind of information, to come to this conclusion.

D. There are many ways to get a top job without a degree.
Wrong: Passage tone, is in question mode, where author highlights some careers
not required degree and needs of employers,
but does not go in description mode to explain many ways to get top job without degree.

E. A degree is no longer the guaranteed route into a good job that it used to be.
Wrong: author has mentioned some careers, where university degree is not required,
but does not apply to professions

2. Which of the following statements,
if true,
would most weaken the case made in the passage?

A. Twenty percent of employers are dissatisfied with the communication skills of graduates.
Strengthen the passage tone, as mentioned in the passage,
“So many graduates these days are simply not leaving university with the basic skills needed by employers”

B. Apart from the few more intellectually demanding jobs,
a degree has little significance to your chances of getting a job.
Strengthenthe passage tone, as mentioned in the passage,
In law enforcement, administration, catering, retail, construction and transport,
there are many highly paid careers to be had without the requirement of going to university.
Take airline pilots, for example. No degree is necessary for this job and most are on salaries of over $100K.

C. Eighty percent of jobs by 2010 will need a degree.
Weaken the passage tone, this stem pressure on need of degree, if 80% job needs Degree, then passage stand only for 20% of remaining careers, which de-means the intended purpose of the sentence.

D. One-third of employers complain that
they cannot fill all their graduate positions.
Strengthen the passage tone, as mentioned in the passage,
“Many employers are complaining that
they cannot find enough candidates of sufficient quality
when they run graduate recruitment campaigns”

E. Eighty percent of graduates by 2010 will be out of work
Strengthen the passage tone, if degree cannot get a job,
then why need degree, plus as mentioned in the passage, there are many careers which doesn’t need one to have degree,
There are plenty of careers that do not need a university degree

3. Which of the following would be the most suitable sentence to follow on from the passage?
Follow from passage, means intended meaning,
meaning of passage is simple, “Is really degree important, does degree is useful in careers?

A. I am not sure of the significance of a degree to the world of work.
Wrong: shares details about curiosity tone, before pursue of degree

B. Many young people drift into university because they do not know what else to do.
Wrong: highlights more about finding direction

C. The number of graduates is increasing at a faster rate than the number of graduate jobs.
more candidates than job opportunity
Wrong: highlights more about opportunity not about the purpose of degree

D. It might well turn out to be the best three or four years of your life
but it will probably not be the sure-fire route to a great job that it used to be.
Meets intended meaning of the passage,
after 3-4 years of degree,
once degree is in your hand,
Does it necessary meets the job requirements?

E. When so many are leaving without a job
Wrong:Irrelevant, this focus on one having “no job”, not about education need vs usage in career

Isn't D & E in Q3 kinda similar?

they both imply that there is a chance that you may not get a job
Nope, E States that many are leaving without a job, it's not that. The employers are not able to fill positions with their desired candidates, which means jobs exists. So D is the answer which says that getting a degree doesn't make them exactly employable as degrees are no longer needed criteria for a job.

It takes me more than 7 minutes to complete this. 2/3, only one wrong answer: Q3.
Let's recap this:
3. Which of the following would be the most suitable sentence to follow on from the passage?

A. I am not sure of the significance of a degree to the world of work. (It's too personal and definitive, so I crossed it out.)
B. Many young people drift into university because they do not know what else to do. (I chose this, but it's turned out to be a bit ambiguous, and don't give me any insight at last.)
C. The number of graduates is increasing at a faster rate than the number of graduate jobs. (No, no evidence can't be inferred here.)
D. It might well turn out to be the best three or four years of your life but it will probably not be the sure-fire route to a great job that it used to be. (This one is correct, because it recaps the implication of the passage really well.)
E. When so many are leaving without a job. (POE)

I have issue with Q1 and Q3
In Q1 A option is too general and extreme. This option directly says ' we dont need degree for a job' but this is too general. There are many jobs which definitely needs degree. Author just mentions few jobs that don't require degree but this doesn't rule out the possibility that it is true for every sector and job. This is a very very extreme generalisation. It could use words like 'not necessary' or 'may be not needed' but this option is too general for me.

For Q3 i have one word issue with D option. It says '.... that it used to be.' means this option is comparing with the past situation but past is not discussed anywhere in the passage. so how can we assume that?

1. Which of the following statements best sums up the general theme made in the passage?

A. You do not need a degree in order to get a good job. (Yes, the passage revolves around this idea) (keep this)

B. A degree is no longer the route to a good job.(the passage use many students example, not all. The passage never proclaims that degree is useless) (incorrect)

C. What is taught at university is not particularly relevant to employers. (The passage doesn't exactly revolve around curriculum. Also not all students yield same result after graduation, which is cleared by using many students in passage) (incorrect)

D. There are many ways to get a top job without a degree. (The ways are not exactly disclosed. The passage just says that one don't need a degree to get a job) (incorrect)

E. A degree is no longer the guaranteed route into a good job that it used to be. (Same mistake as B, tall claim. Many students vs all students) (incorrect)

Answer is A

2. Which of the following statements, if true, would most weaken the case made in the passage?

A. Twenty percent of employers are dissatisfied with the communication skills of graduates. (Supports the passage claim that the skills of grads are not sufficient) (incorrect)

B. Apart from the few more intellectually demanding jobs, a degree has little significance to your chances of getting a job. (Supports the passage claim that degree is not required for job) (incorrect)

C. Eighty percent of jobs by 2010 will need a degree. (This weakens the passage claim stating 80% jobs need degrees) (Keep this)

D. One-third of employers complain that they cannot fill all their graduate positions. (Same issue as B, employers can't fill grad position because of skills gap) (incorrect)

E. Eighty percent of graduates by 2010 will be out of work. (Again, support the passage. If grads will be out of job, pursuing degree is useless) (Incorrect)

Answer is C

3. Which of the following would be the most suitable sentence to follow on from the passage?

A. I am not sure of the significance of a degree to the world of work. (The degree is significant to some. Not every student is included in the passage claim)(Incorrect)

B. Many young people drift into university because they do not know what else to do.(No, the students' indecisiveness is not directed in passage) (Incorrect)

C. The number of graduates is increasing at a faster rate than the number of graduate jobs. (Can't determine the rate) (incorrect)

D. It might well turn out to be the best three or four years of your life but it will probably not be the sure-fire route to a great job that it used to be. (Yes, the passage does say that having a degree will not prepare all for jobs) (keep this)

E. When so many are leaving without a job.(no data is mentioned) (incorrect)

Answer is D
