(B)- have..see is wrong.
(C)- wordy.
(E) - sediments aren't marking passage of time, colors are.

(D) with "different colors marking.." is correct but i'm not sure if "been able to see" colors is correct or wrong. sounds awkward.

"that" in (A) is suspicious as well.should introduce restrictive clause.

I choose D. but not sure between A and D.
Can someone please explain?
