Three teams, A, B and C each have five members. The three teams competed in a three-event competition. The points earned by individual members of the teams were added to get the team totals. Five points were awarded to the individual winner of each event, four points to the second and three points to the third. (No points were awarded for lower positions). Which team won the competition?

(1) No team scored fewer points than C, which scored 11 points.
(2) Members of Team A won two events and came second in the third event.

NOTE - You can easily go wrong if you take that the 9 winners will include 3 from each A, B and C. Any team can have all THREE positions in ONE event and also can have all 5 of its members in the POINT tally...

With this info and that TOTAL points will be (5+4+3)*3 = 36, lets see the statements-

(1) No team scored fewer points than C, which scored 11 points.
so C scored 11..
so the points could be C -11 and other TWO teams - 11 and 14 OR 12 and 13..
we know C was last or one of the last but cannot say about the winner
Insuff

(2) Members of Team A won two events and came second in the third event.
Points of A = 5+5+4 = 14...
we do not know WHAT other two teams scored.......
Could be rest 5 out of six winning positions were taken by 1 of teh two remaining teams and thus A will not be the winner...
But if each TEAM won 3 positions A will be the winner..

Insuff..

Combined
C scored 11 and A scored 14 so B scored 36-11-14 = 12..
hence A is the winning team
Suff

C
Can you please explain statement 2 analysis in detail?

Can you please explain statement 2 analysis in detail?

(2) Members of Team A won two events and came second in the third event.

The winner has 5 points , second position gives 4 and third positions gives 3 points..
A has 2 first position and 1 second position so total score = 5+5+4 = 14...

Two cases-

1) all three had equal number of winners that is 3 each = 3*3 = 9 and there are 9 winning positions..
so max points OTHER team can get is the topmost positions left after A has won its positions..
so next three would be 1st in one and 2nd in remaining two, where A ia first = 5+4+4 = 13 points..
so A has to be the max

2) There is no restrictions on number of winners..
there are 5 players in each team and 9 winning positions..
1st positions in TWo games and 2nd in the third are already taken over by A..
Let us see what is the MAX pssible for any other team to score..
so all 5 members of the other team win some winning position and third team wins th eremaining 9-3-5 = 1 position..
possible score = 5+4+4+3+3 = 19..
so this team will have highest score and not A..

different answers possible

Tanisha,

36 = TOTAL points that any team can win as (5+4+3)*3 = 36

11 = Total points C won

14 = Total points A won

so Total = A + B + C

36 = 14 + B + 11

B = 11

I think there was some typo by Chetan, Overall answers remains the same.

Hope this make the solution clear.

you missed out on the points for the third position, which will make remaining points as 22

ravisinghal
stmt 1 :- Team C can have 11 points :- if it has got 2nd place in 2 events and third in 3rd event :- 4+4+3 =11
Now either a or B can win the competition.Not suff
Stmt 2 :- Team A has points as :- 5 + 5+4 = 14
either B or c can have max points as :- 4+4+5 = 13
So A has won the completion :- Suff
B.. I think
