B) Coping with the 50 percent price plunge and laying off thousands of workers, focused their rigs on the biggest gushers only, companies used cutting-edge technology to squeeze all the oil they could out of every well. ----The lay -off is one of the core actions to cope with and cannot be put in as a participle modifier.

C) To cope with the 50 percent price plunge, companies laid off thousands of workers, focused their rigs on the biggest gushers only and used cutting-edge technology to squeeze all the oil they could out of every well. --- enlists all the three measures in three separate verbs such as laid off, focused and used; correct

We need the structure - To cope with the price, company did X, Y and Z.

This changes the meaning of the sentence. The aim of the company is to cope with the price plunge only. This statements points that the aim is to cope with prices and lay of employees.

C is the correct option as it is parallel.

C) To cope with the 50 percent price plunge, companies laid off thousands of workers, focused their rigs on the biggest gushers only and used cutting-edge technology to squeeze all the oil they could out of every well.
