This is GMAT Club's Most Popular 20 GMAT Books

Please also see this recommendation: Best GMAT Books

Did you ever wonder which GMAT Books are most popular? We did!
We looked at our forum and counted the number of times each of the GMAT prep books has been mentioned by our members and created a popularity ranking.

[Reveal] Spoiler: Old
Not sure about you, but I was surprised a little to see the books that made it to the top. On the other hand, the search results included all references starting with 2003, so potentially popularity of some books is inflated as others were not yet available back then. But again, at the end of March we will release the updated ranking that will reflect only results for March.

I am not sure how to best post tables in the forum, so here is one version and also another version with links at the bottom:
Code:
#   References   GMAT Club's Top 20 GMAT Books
1   2985   The Official Guide for GMAT Review
2   1667   Manhattan GMAT Sentence Correction
3   1332   GMAT 800
4   557   Official Guide for Verbal Review
5   494   Official Guide for Quantitative Review
6   427   Kaplan Verbal Workbook
7   360   Kaplan Math Workbook
8   334   Cracking the GMAT by Princeton Review
9   311   Kaplan Premier Program
10  215   Manhattan GMAT CR Book
11  195   Powerscore Critical Reasoning Bible
12  79   Manhattan GMAT Number Properties Guide
13  73   Project GMAT Advanced Math
14  71   Manhattan GMAT Word Translations Guide

19  4   Manhattan GMAT Equations Inequalities and Vics Guide
20  4   The Ultimate Math Refresher for the GRE, GMAT, and SAT

Also, let me know if there other notable books we should include into our ranking and we will keep track of those as well.

In terms of strategy, what would you guys suggest for someone just starting out to study the GMAT? I heard Princeton Review is the best for beginners. After understanding the test, I heard that people move onto Manahattan GMAT. Any thoughts?

Yep that works - you can try either Kaplan or PR - both are good to get you started. See this post for a bit more clarity: gmat-study-plan-for-gmat-novices-start-your-gmat-journey-80727.html

Some have an issue with PR as it emphasizes tricks rather than solid knowledge when answering gmat questions. However, with both Kaplan and PR, you will need some additional help for your math or verbal to get it to the right level. See here too: top-gmat-prep-books-guides-reviews-comments-77703.html

I have a total of 6 different comprehensive study books, this doesn't include books for the individual sections, and I found Cracking the GMAT the simplest to understand. It got right to the point and not only did they explain how to answer the question correctly they really put you in the mind set of taking the test. I found the Kaplan had a few more unique and smart strategies but Cracking was the only one that really broke down not only how to take the test but how to think about the test. I think while it is not the only book to have it is a must have.

i was wondering...
how important is the Kaplan GMAT 2010 Premier Live Online???

I will definately buy the OG...

Also nink posted a list of books for different subjects

Quote:
Verbal:
1) Do diagnostic testing on GMATPRep to get sense of your strength & weaknesses.
2) Sentence Correction - Manhattan GMAT SC is a MUST
3) Critical Reasoning - either Powerscore Critical Reasoning Bible or Manhattan GMAT CR Book (either one is fine)
4) Reading Comprehension - GRE Prep for RC from Princeton Review is a great choice
5) Then do this last - Official Guide for Verbal

Math:
1) same as Verbal (1)
2) Buy all or some of MGMAT's MATH guides based on your strength and weaknesses for fundamental review

A. Number Properties Guide

B. Equations Inequalities and Vics Guide

C. Fractions, Decimals, and Percents Guide

D. Word Translations Guide

E. Geometry GMAT Guide

What is your opinion on each of these books?

It is not required by no means - I just tend to send people there to get their bearings and pick up free tests.
About these books - Nink got 770 - do I really need to comment?

Great piece of information.

Although I persnoally feel looking at the list, there is a lot of overlap of techniques once you've done 2 or 3 books of different publishers.

At the end of the day, my advice is pick 3 and finish them thoroughly. Take a practice test at the end of each so that you can assess where you stand. Once finished all, and still you're not improving, then surely you can browse through other books. At the end of the day its practice that counts, and the test tips/strategies/tips can only do just a bump in your score.

Kudos!!! Thanx a lot dude.Just wanted to know if the total MGMAT set and OG set is good to cover a-z or you would recommend any combination from other publishers as there seem to be some cons with some books in each publisher. Thanks in advance for reply.

P.S.: Am i stuffing my shelf with buying the whole set?

it depends on your weaknesses - if you wanted to cover A to Z, then yes, 8 Manhattan Guides and OG is the right way to go.
There are actually all 8 of them bundled up here to save $$: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/098417 ... 098417804X _________________ Founder of GMAT Club US News Rankings progression - last 10 years in a snapshot - New! There is MGMAT Geometry for one. Kaplan Math Workbook also has an extensive coverage. THere are a few others, but I can't remember the exact names right now.

Kaplan does not nearly go into the depth of MGMAT.
Kaplan has 3 books -Kaplan Premier, Kaplan Math Workbook, and Kaplan Verbal Workbook + Kaplan Math Foundations and Kaplan Verbal Foundations
MGMAT has 8 guides + MGMAT Math Foundations; MGMAT also relies on the OG for additional practice (which is nice to tie it in). You will get more practice and more online content with MGMAT as well.
