I'm just thinking out loud.

There's tons of good info here, yet people appear to be deadset on asking questions over and over...

Thanks a lot for this topic. It is indeed very helpful to know which books are popular so now I can make my choices on which ones to read.

GMAT Club August 2009
August's list is out - nothing unusual really in this edition, just some natural fluctuations. The list has pretty much stayed the same for the past few months. However, in this edition I am highlighting books that lost positions in red and books that gained positions in green.

Good Luck on the GMAT. Hope this helps. For other book threads see this link: top-gmat-prep-books-guides-reviews-comments-77703.html

In terms of strategy, what would you guys suggest for someone just starting out to study the GMAT? I heard Princeton Review is the best for beginners. After understanding the test, I heard that people move onto Manahattan GMAT. Any thoughts?

Yep that works - you can try either Kaplan or PR - both are good to get you started. See this post for a bit more clarity: gmat-study-plan-for-gmat-novices-start-your-gmat-journey-80727.html

Some have an issue with PR as it emphasizes tricks rather than solid knowledge when answering gmat questions. However, with both Kaplan and PR, you will need some additional help for your math or verbal to get it to the right level. See here too: top-gmat-prep-books-guides-reviews-comments-77703.html

i was wondering...
how important is the Kaplan GMAT 2010 Premier Live Online???

I will definately buy the OG...

Also nink posted a list of books for different subjects

Quote:
Verbal:
1) Do diagnostic testing on GMATPRep to get sense of your strength & weaknesses.
2) Sentence Correction - Manhattan GMAT SC is a MUST
3) Critical Reasoning - either Powerscore Critical Reasoning Bible or Manhattan GMAT CR Book (either one is fine)
4) Reading Comprehension - GRE Prep for RC from Princeton Review is a great choice
5) Then do this last - Official Guide for Verbal

Math:
1) same as Verbal (1)
2) Buy all or some of MGMAT's MATH guides based on your strength and weaknesses for fundamental review

A. Number Properties Guide

B. Equations Inequalities and Vics Guide

C. Fractions, Decimals, and Percents Guide

D. Word Translations Guide

E. Geometry GMAT Guide

What is your opinion on each of these books?

It is not required by no means - I just tend to send people there to get their bearings and pick up free tests.
About these books - Nink got 770 - do I really need to comment?

Great piece of information.

Although I persnoally feel looking at the list, there is a lot of overlap of techniques once you've done 2 or 3 books of different publishers.

At the end of the day, my advice is pick 3 and finish them thoroughly. Take a practice test at the end of each so that you can assess where you stand. Once finished all, and still you're not improving, then surely you can browse through other books. At the end of the day its practice that counts, and the test tips/strategies/tips can only do just a bump in your score.

Kudos!!! :thanks Thanx a lot dude.Just wanted to know if the total MGMAT set and OG set is good to cover a-z or you would recommend any combination from other publishers as there seem to be some cons with some books in each publisher. Thanks in advance for reply. :)

P.S.: Am i stuffing my shelf with buying the whole set?

it depends on your weaknesses - if you wanted to cover A to Z, then yes, 8 Manhattan Guides and OG is the right way to go.
There are actually all 8 of them bundled up here to save $$$:
Thanks again for the rpy.I havn't tested my strengths and weakness yet, but would really appreciate if you could suggest any additional books which concentrate on geometry (i think the last time i studied it was during my 10th grade Q_Q)

P.S: i removed ur link for amazon as i dont have the privilege to post links :P
