From 1st of the May to onward the RC Butler project will be running in normal mode, i will write more about the competition on the closing day tomorrow. Good Luck to all of you. Got 2/3 correct in 8 mins 10 secs.
Made a silly mistake in the last one.
Is the timing idea or do I need to cut on it.( Please base the response of the fact that I am to take the exam on 9th of this month).

Official explanation : Darwin brought to attention phenomena which molded or influenced geological speculation (formulating and discussing causes and reasons for geological phenomena), i.e., gave it a certain direction. It did not cause speculation among geologists.

Answer: B

My analysis :

A. Providing observations, which were crucial in negating prevalent fallacies.
From the passage "The merit of the work consisted in supplying interesting observations, which in some cases have proved to be of crucial value in exploding prevalent fallacies;". Eliminate "a".

B. Pointing out phenomena which geologists had overlooked but have since then caused a lot of speculation among geologists.
From the passage "in calling attention to phenomena and considerations that had been quite overlooked by geologists, but have since exercised an important influence in molding geological speculation;" Eliminate "B".

C. ringing to light the importance of seemingly minor causes, some of which provide keys to very curious geological problems.
From the passage "lastly in showing the importance of small and seemingly insignificant causes, some of which afford a key to the explanation of very curious geological problems." Eliminate "C"

D. Influencing geological speculation by bringing into focus phenomena and consideration that were overlooked by geologists.
No mention about the influencing speculation in the passage.

E. Bringing to light many phenomena, observations and details that added significantly, both directly and indirectly, to new geological thought and explanations.
Implied in the passage. Eliminate " E"

SajjadAhmad , bm2201 :

We both agree that the author mentions and suggests all of the following as merits of Darwin's work except influencing speculation.

So D must be the answer instead of B ?

Hi Abhishekrao12,

Options B and D are very close, but if you read them closely, you will find that what D really means can be inferred from the following lines: "The merit of the work consisted in supplying interesting observations, which in some cases have proved to be of crucial value in exploding prevalent fallacies; in calling attention to phenomena and considerations that had been quite overlooked by geologists, but have since exercised an important influence in molding geological speculation;".

These lines imply that the phenomena that was previously overlooked by geologists, in now in focus and it has influenced in forming geological speculation.
What options B implies is that the phenomena caused a lot speculations, which we cannot infer from the passage. So the correct answer is B.

Hope this Helps.
Thanks.

For Question 2 - It has been mentioned that Darwin "While, however, agreeing on the whole with Scrope and Lyell". That means Darwin agreed with the opposition of Elevation Crater theory as done by Scrope and Lyell. So isn't Darwin also negating the work of Von Duch?

Secondly in Option C it is stated that "Showing that the evidence need not lend itself solely to the interpretation strengthening the truth of 'Elevation-Craters' " - My question is where did Darwin explicitly explained that the evidence is strengthening this theory?

Hello Ayushi2000

Darwin agreed with Scrope and Lyell, who opposed the Elevation-Crater theory. However, the passage states that Darwin's key contribution was showing that the same evidence used by Von Buch could support a different interpretation, not that he outright "negated" the theory.

The passage says: "Darwin was able to show that the facts were capable of a totally different interpretation."

He didn't dismiss the evidence as "meager/unconvincing" he reinterpreted it. While he aligned with critics of the theory, his approach was more delicate than flat negation.

Secondly in Option C it is stated that "Showing that the evidence need not lend itself solely to the interpretation strengthening the truth of 'Elevation-Craters' " - My question is where did Darwin explicitly explained that the evidence is strengthening this theory?

The qouted phrase does not imply Darwin endorsed the theory. Rather, it reflects that Von Buch and others believed the evidence supported their view, whereas Darwin showed it could support an alternative.

The passage notes that Von Buch's interpretation was widely accepted ("almost universally accepted by his countrymen"), so the evidence was seen as strengthening the theory—until Darwin reinterpreted it. Darwin's work demonstrated that the evidence was not exclusive to the Elevation-Crater hypothesis.
