Veritas Prep Official Explanation



Correct Answer: B

Choice A lacks a main verb to complete the passive construction with the subject "ancient volcanoes." In this context, "thought" is a past participle and cannot function as a main verb.

Answer choice B is correct, forming the subject-predicate construction "volcanoes are thought to be a possible cause"

Answer choices C, D and E commit Sentence Construction errors similar to that in choice A, leaving "volcanoes" without a verb

Option B is correct.

"Whose lava flows cover... of India, " which is a description of the volcanoes and is a modifier.

Simple trick is remove the modifer and read the remaining sentence.

Ancient Volcanoes _____ one of the possible causes of dinosaur extinction.

If you fill the answer option in the blank it should make sense.

A. thought to be - no verb (it feels like volcanoes are thinking)

B. are thought to be - correct fit

C. some think them to be - doesn't make sense

D. some think they are - doesn't make sense

E. it is thought that they are - doesn't make sense
