Here is a WSJ article about the changes in interviewing tactics at Wharton..

https://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204368104577139031236229636.html?KEYWORDS=business+school

Quote:
This admissions season, business school alumni are the ones facing rejection.

Graduate schools including University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School are bypassing alumni in admissions interviews to meet directly with M.B.A. candidates in person or via Skype videoconferencing, despite the potential higher costs, in an attempt to ensure interviews are being conducted in a uniform manner—and in English.

and corresponding video: https://online.wsj.com/video/business-schools-up-ante-on-admissions-interviews/1530FE03-CB0F-44B8-911B-5B1B36377362.html

I am not a big fan of "alumni interview" because, IMO, it's quite subjective. If the interviewer doesn't like you, I think that it's quite a sure ding for you. I applied for Chicago Booth last year and was waitlisted. I really think that the interview was the killer, as my interviewer didn't like me. She and I disagreed about lots of things. And I disastrously made an impression on her that I was quite arrogant :(. I was quite certain that she made negative comments on me and didn't recommend me to Booth!

The Admissions Committee will release interview invitations between Thursday, January 26th and Tuesday, February 28th. Due to the nature and complexity associated with the admissions process there is no particular order in which invitations are released. Also on February 28th, the Committee will release all final admissions decisions to candidates that are not being invited for an interview and therefore no longer being considered for admission.

Last year, the interview release period lasted for only 2 weeks. This year, it is 4 weeks! I wish it to last only 2. How could I suffer 4 weeks of excruciating emotional roller coaster :(.

Thank you for submitting your application for Round Two.

The following will provide you with information concerning the processing of application materials, timeline for the release of interview invitations, and final decision releases.

If your online account reads "Complete - Round Two," your application has all the required materials, has been processed by the Operations Team, and has been forwarded to the Committee for review.

If your online account reads "Received," then the Operations Team needs to process your online application submission and any materials submitted by hard copy. After your materials have been processed (assuming they arrived before the Round Two deadline), your online account will be changed to "Complete for Round Two" and your file will be forwarded to the Committee for review. Due to the high number of candidates who submitted their application during the past few days (more than 60% of candidates applying for Round Two submitted their application within 24 hours of the deadline), it will take the Operations Team several days to complete the processing of all materials. Therefore, please allow the Operations Team until Tuesday, January 10th before inquiring about the completeness of your application.

If you are invited for an interview, you will need to complete your interview by Friday, March 9th. Interviews will be available on campus with second-year Wharton MBA Students who are full members of the Admissions Committee and off campus in various "Hubs" around the world by Admissions staff members. All interview options are equally considered within the admissions process.

Candidates who are offered an interview will receive their final admissions decision by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on Friday, March 30th.

Thank you again for applying to Wharton. We look forward to reading your application.

Sincerely,

Wharton MBA Admissions Committee
Lauder Admissions Committee
University of Pennsylvania Law School Admissions Committee

Hope this helps.

Does anyone here have any insight into what Wharton's 3rd Round application process is like? Do they accept a significantly less percentage of applicants in Round 3 than they do Rounds 1 and 2?

Any thoughts and recommendations on what type of candidates Wharton is looking for to fill out their class would be appreciated. I have applied to 3 other schools but am considering taking the time to complete a Wharton 3rd round.

About me: 740, 3.0, Interested in Wharton's Health Care Management program.

Because Wharton's Health Care program's application process is relatively unique (e.g. you must indicate your interest in the program when you submit your applicaton) you may want to call June Kinney. From my interactions with her, she is very open to talking to students and you may want to ask her if it makes sense to apply this year or next year. I would think about how your healthcare background/interest will fill out Wharton's HCM program in addition to how it will fill out broader Wharton program. Just make sure you give a compelling story as to how you will impact Wharton and how it will impact your career (e.g. rather than say you are a team player, write a story that highlights how you were a team player at work).

Hopefully that is helpful and good luck in the application process.

Hey generalhorn,

I'm merely restating an answer I got from an member of the AdCom at a info session: in Round 3, it gets much tougher as seats are even more limited. In this round you must definitely mention why you delayed your application (deal to close, important client contract deadline to respect...).
What I took from it is that you better explain well why you didnt go for R1/R2, and in this round even the most qualified people get denied at a high rate particularly at Wharton. An alum at my company told me the AdCom is basically looking to fill the very last seats in this round. This is not an official answer, so take it for what it's worth.

Thanks for the information! I am disappointed they are not coming to Paris.
They say:
Wharton
As we have mentioned before, we understand completely that there may be extenuating circumstances that hinder your ability to interview at a major city location or on campus. For those applicants, we offer phone interviews with a member of our admissions staff.
In case I get an invitation, do you think it will be a disadvantage to do the phone interview vs going to London to meet the adcom?

Well if you are better in phone interviews than in person, have already visited the campus and have a good excuse you should be fine. Otherwise, I would at least travel to London.
